(July 8, 2008)

German Federal Minister of Education and Research, Dr. Annette Schavan, and her delegation visited the permanent site of the GJU in Mushaqar/ Madaba, where she was introduced to a model of the prospective permanent campus and briefed about its various sections. On that occasion, Dr. Schavan gave a short speech to the audience and later a ceremony was held for planting a two-thousand year old Olive Tree by Her Excellency and unveiling a sign depicting Jordanian-German friendship.

At the end of the tree-planting ceremony, Dr. Schavan and her delegation were escorted to the construction site of the GJU buildings, where they viewed the ongoing work on the high water tank and other university infrastructure.   

Later that day, Dr. Schavan visited the tourist sites of Madaba city, where she ended her full-scheduled trip to Jordan.


(July 7, 2008)

The Minister of Education and Research of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Annette Schavan, participated in the opening ceremony of the Regional Conference organized by the Conrad Adenauer Foundation, held at Talal Abu Ghazaleh College/ German-Jordanian University, and delivered a short speech at the opening.

Later, Her Excellency and her delegation arrived at the GJU campus and had a meeting with Prof. Khadra at his office. She then met with a group of GJU students travelling to Germany and their lecturers and advisors at the main meeting room of GJU. Her Excellency was quite pleased with the students and their distinction.

On the same day, Dr. Schavan delivered a lecture organized by the GJU entitled "Jordan and Germany – Partners in Science and Research", attended by a large audience consisting of ministers, senates, deputies, university rectors, and members of the academia. The lecture was keenly received and highly appreciated by the attendance.

Afterwards, Her Excellency had a tour at the GJU campus, and paid a special visit to the Faculty of Architecture for a briefing about the faculty and its programs.


(July 6, 2008)

The Minister of Education and Research of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Annette Schavan, arrived in Amman with her delegation on a three-day visit to the Kingdom (7 – 9 July) and was received at the airport by GJU President Prof. Labib Khadra, who escorted her to the VIP lounge of the airport. The delegation included HE Prof. Jan-Henrick Olbertz, the Minister of Education and Research of the State of Sachsen-Anhalt, and Prof. Stefan Hormuth, President of DAAD.

  

(June 29, 2008)

The German-Jordanian University signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 29 June 2008 with Hikma Pharmaceuticals LTD, stipulating cooperation in an internship program for students spending their fourth academic year in Germany. According to the MoU, Hikma Pharmaceuticals will accept two to three GJU students enrolled in the Chemical-Pharmaceutical Engineering program as "trainees" for field training at the premises of Hikma in Jordan for a specific period, and in Germany for a period of six months; the GJU shall not pay Hikma any fees for this internship. This MoU is a significant step in terms of GJU's collaboration with the private sector, and builds on a history of cooperation between GJU and Jordanian Pharmaceutical Industry, with a wider aim to strengthen cooperation in research, science, management, and technology.


(Wednesday 11 June 2008)

Under the Patronage of His Excellency Eng. Basem Rousan, Minister of Information and Communications Technology (MoICT), a workshop entitled “Workforce in Jordanian ICT Industry: Competency-based Evaluations and Needs Assessment” was held at the Sheraton Hotel on Wednesday 11 June. The event was organized by The German-Jordanian University (GJU) in cooperation with the MoICT, Information Technology Association - Jordan – int@j and with the support of EU commission – Education and Culture TEMPUS, and USAID- Jordan Economic Development Program (SABEQ). The workshop presented the results of a comprehensive survey on workforce needs and requirements in the ICT sector carried out by the GJU.

 

 


(2nd - 8th June 2008)

The German-Jordanian University hosted Mr. Johann Rist, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Applied Sciences - München, from 2nd until 8th June 2008. Mr. Rist held individual meetings and exchanged views with GJU President Prof. Labib Khadra, Vice Presidents Prof. Peter Ücker and Prof. Ziad Saad, as well as the GJU's Deans and administrative staff. Mr. Rist's schedule also included visits to the GJU's permanent site near Madaba and to Petra. The fruitful visit came as part of GJU's interaction and exchange of expertise with partner universities in Germany.

 


(4 June 2008)

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed yesterday at Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) between the German-Jordanian University (GJU), GAM, and Hikmat Road Safety Foundation to launch a "Road Safety Center of Excellence". The MoU was signed by Amman Mayor Eng. Omar Ma'ani, GJU President Professor Labib Khadra, and Eng. Maher Qadura on behalf of Hikmat Foundation. Amman Mayor stated that this step is a real practical implementation of the proposals and ideas presented by specialists to improve road safety and limit road accidents. He praised Hikmat Foundation's efforts in this field and the GJU's initiative of providing the study programs, the teaching and training plans, and the suitable location.  

The Center, which will be located at the GJU, aims at preparing professionals in the field of road safety who are capable of examining traffic issues and hence can see to improving the status quo by spreading favourable practices, locating traffic problems and proposing appropriate solutions.

The Center, expected to begin tuition next academic year, will offer a professional diploma in road safety meant for specialists in this field, as we;; as short training courses (2-4 weeks) to be offered this summer, in addition to various workshops focusing on road safety. GAM will be relying on the results of the applied research carried out by the Center concerning the improvement of road safety in Jordan, and will see to enrolling GAM employees in the courses offered by the Center.

 


(Tuesday, 27 May, 2008) GJU celebrate the independent day 

Under the Patronage of University President, Prof. Labib Khadra, the Deanship of Students' Affairs organized a celebration on the occasion of Independence Day, which falls on 25 May of every year. Brigadier General Mohammad Al-Ragad from Jordan Armed Forces (JAF) was invited by the Dean of Students' Affairs to brief the audience on JAF's achievements and their development throughout the history of the Kingdom.  The Celebration included honouring distinguished students in various activities by presenting them trophies, in addition to honouring one of the very first employees of the GJU.

   

(Wednesday, 21 May, 2008) GJU signed the second Tender for the establishment of the GJU infrastructure at its permanent location

Under the patronage of Professor Fayez Khasawneh, GJU Chairman of the Board of Trustees, GJU President Professor Labib Khadra signed the second Tender for the establishment of the GJU infrastructure at its permanent location (in Mushaggar area, 20 km southwest of Amman). The value of this tender amounts to JD10.5 million, and was referred to Hussein Attiya Company for Constructions and Contracting. The works are expected to be completed within 500 calendar days. 

The GJU will soon announce its third Tender as well for the establishment of the Applied Medical Sciences Faculty, which will occupy an area of 14000 sqm, and will include an industrial zone of 1000 sqm

 


(15 May 2008) Representatives of Ukrainian universities and institutes visit the German-Jordanian University

A high-ranking 15-member delegation representing Ukrainian universities and institutes visited the German-Jordanian University (GJU) on 15 May 2008, with the aim of getting acquainted with the GJU's successful international experience. President of GJU, Professor Labib Khadra, welcomed the delegation and both sides discussed prospects of cooperation in view of GJU's experience in international cooperation. Dr. Salem Al-Agtash, Acting Dean of the School of Informatics and Computing, briefed the guests on the GJU's establishment, schools, application-oriented programs, and future plans. The head and members of the delegation made several queries regarding GJU and were answered by the President. The head of the guest delegation also proposed to establish bilateral cooperation between GJU and Universities in Ukraine through Tempus program, and invited Prof. Khadra to visit Kiev and its universities.

 


(27 April 2008) German-Jordanian University Joins "Laptop for Each Student" Initiative

Under the patronage of the Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Basem Roussan, the German-Jordanian University signed an agreement with Jordan Post on 27 April 2008, stipulating the first stage of the "laptop for each student" initiative. Professor Labib Khadra, President of GJU, signed the agreement on the behalf of GJU, while Dr. Wael Akayleh, Director General of Jordan Post, signed it on the other side.

By signing this agreement, the GJU would ensure that each of its students would get the opportunity to purchase a laptop. It is the fourth Jordanian University to sign an agreement to implement the above stated Initiative, and has consequently joined Yarmouk University, Jordan University of Science and Technology, and Princess Sumaya University.


(12 - 14 April 2008) Participates in the 8th Academia Exhibition in Syria.

Prof. Ziad Al-Kurdi Dean of students affairs, Dr. Laila Yaghi Assistant to the president for Quality Assurance and Accreditation and Ms. Safa'a Massanat Director of Internal Control Department represented the German Jordanian University in this exhibition. The university participated in the exhibition that was held in Damascus during 12-14 of April 2008. About thirty universities from around the world have participated in the exhibit. Prof. Ziad had many meetings with some of the participated universities and planning to have relationships in the future.

A lot of students asked about MBA program and the possibility of obtain scholarships.


(April 12, 2008) First Graduation ceremony for the Professional Diploma in Vision Rehabilitation

Under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Ra'ad bin Zeid, the German-Jordanian University organized the first graduation ceremony for the Professional Diploma in Vision Rehabilitation, held at the Royal Scientific Society, the Hashemite Hall. His Royal Highness Prince Ra'ad handed the Diplomas to the fourteen thrilled graduates and the ceremony was followed by a lunch banquet at the University's restaurant. The ceremony was attended by Prof. Labib Khadra, President of the GJU, in addition to Dr. Adel Al-Tuweisi, President of Al-Hasan Scientific City, and His Excellency Mr. Klaus Burkhardt, the German Ambassador in Amman.

By bringing international experts to Jordan, the programme of the Professional Diploma in Vision Rehabilitation offers a unique opportunity to professionals in relevant sectors to improve their practice and develop new services both in Jordan and the Arab region. Mrs. Silvia Burkhardt and Dr. Nathalie Bussiers coordinated this programme with the help of GJU.

 

 


Under the patronage of Prof. Labib Khadra president of GJU, Deanship of Students' Affairs organized a musical party to celebrate His Majesty King Abdallah II Ibn Al Hussein birthday. The GJU musical band performed traditional and national thrilling songs.


Amjad Shahrour (member of GJU musical band) won the solo guitar competition prize of the Cultural and Artistic League of the Universities of Jordan. Mutah University president granted Amjad the prize in a celebration, Prof. Ziad Alkurdi dean of students' Affairs attended the celebration.

 


The German-Jordanian University has reached an agreement to implement the first building of its permanent site in Mushaqqar area/Madaba.


(December 8, 2007) Under the patronage of the President of the University, GJU and Oracle will launch Oracle Academy on Saturday December 8th, 2007 - Workshop "IT Skills for 21st Century

 


(November 12, 2007) The Cafeteria in the new building B is ready now and it has been opened on Monday 12th Nov.2007. The 2nd floor will be ready for both Academic and Administrative staff daily from (1:00-2:00) pm.


(November 3, 2007) On the 3rd of November Ruprecht Polenz, a high ranking politician from Germany, visited the GJU. Mr. Polenz, who is the head of Bundestags' Committee on Foreign Affairs,  met with students of the Masters Program "German as a Foreign Language" and some Bachelor Degree students. He discussed with them their studies at GJU, their experiences with Germany, and plans for their professional future.

During his stay in Jordan Mr. Polenz also met His Majesty King Abdullah II and attended a conference held by Konrad Adenauer Foundation.


(October 30, 2007)

The School of Architecture and Design at the German Jordanian University discussed the initiation of a cooperation program with the University of Dortmund in Germany regarding the establishment of a Masters Degree Program in Spatial Planning. Students and staff exchange was also included in the discussion. The cooperation project between the two universities is funded by the DAAD.

Accordingly, The School of Architecture and Design at the German Jordanian University has organized and hosted a joint planning workshop based on the cooperation project, with the University of Dortmund and other Arab regional universities between the 27th of October and the 5th of November 2007. It was opened under the patronage of Prof. Labib Khadra, President of the German Jordanian University with a welcoming note by Prof. Peter Uecker on behalf of Prof. Khadra and followed by an introductory presentation of the cooperation project by Prof. Christa Reicher, the manager of the Project, and Head of the Department of Urban Design and Land Use Planning at the University of Dortmund.

(October 20-22, 2007) German IT network members held a meeting jointly with the Industry Advisory Board of the School of Informatics & Computing at GJU during October 20-22

20 leaders of the IT Industry in Jordan met with the IT Network members to discuss the issues related to the programs offered by School of Informatics and Computing to align it with the requirements of the IT Sector needs. Also the internship procedures and requirements has been discussed in the meeting as a part of the curricula.


(August 15, 2007) In Appreciation of His Efforts in Establishing and Developing,  The German-Jordanian University Professor Labib Khadra, President of the German-Jordanian University, Receives the Bundesverdienskreuz Award from German Government

 

Dr. Horst Kohler, President of the Federal Republic of Germany bestowed upon Professor Labib Khadra, President of the German-Jordanian University the Bundesverdienskreuz Award; the  Federal Cross of Merit, officially Verdienstorden der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany which  is the only general state decoration of the Federal Republic of Germany. This Federal Order of Merit has existed since September 7, 1951. The merit is awarded to Professor Khadra in appreciation of his  efforts in establishing and developing the German-Jordanian University project in a relatively short span of time. The University project is the output of a Memorandum of Understanding that has been reached between the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Jordan, and the Ministry of Education and Research in Germany. A Royal Decree has recently been issued allowing Professor Khadra to receive this prestigious award.

 

The present and temporary location of the University is within the premises of the Royal Scientific Society (Jubeiha). The University has plans to move to its permanent within the Governorate of Madaba, which is 20 kilometers to the South of  the capital city Amman as soon as construction of its buildings has been completed.

(12 May 2007) GJU Students Win Locally in Microsoft Competition

"Rubbing Shoulders" Team at the German Jordanian University - School of Informatics & Computing won the local competition in the Imagine Cup, and will be competing at the regional level. The project submitted to Microsoft Imagine cup was entitled "Rubbing Shoulders": an educational PC Application designed to create an inclusive learning and teaching experience for students. Using Rubbing Shoulders, students can learn elementary Mathematics and English interactively and in groups on one PC, while maximizing the quality of education and interaction time. Rubbing Shoulders also provides teachers with a tool to not only design their own Rubbing Shoulder courses, but also with the ability to monitor the progress of students. Rubbing Shoulders was designed primary schools where the number of installed PCs is limited, enabling multiple students to share interface with one PC at the same time.

The deanship of student affairs organized a seminar introduced by the brigadier general Mohammad Al-Ragad titled of "reign & achievements" to celebrate the birthday of his majesty king Abdullah ||.

(1-10/2/2007) GJU Participates in the Jordanian Universities Athletics' Championship

Prof. Ziad Al-Kurdi and Mr. Fawwaz Al-Saqqar and four students (Hassan Farroukh, Hani Al-Bilbesi, Sulaman Al-Awamleh and Tamer Al-Aswad) took part in the inter university athletics championship which was hold in aqaba from 1st to 10th of February. this is the first time that the university participates. Dr. Alkurdi said that the university will take part of swimming, basketball and football championship.

(1-2-2007) Lunching Sun Academic Initiative at the German-Jordanian University - Talal Abu-Ghazaleh School of Business and School of Informatics & Computing

In an effort to develop technical skills, bridge the gap between the requirements at the local market and increase the professional skills of the students in the information technology sector, an agreement is signed between the German Jordanian University and Sun Microsystems to launch Sun Authorized Academic Institution (SAI). In accordance to the agreement, STS the leading integrated IT solution provider in Jordan, completed installing SUN UNIX educational labs at the German-Jordanian University under special academic programs from SUN Microsystems.

(22-1-2007) Celebration of the lunching of the college of Architecture and Design

Under the patronage of the university president Dr. Labib Al-Khadra, the college of  Architecture and Design held its lunching cermony. the cereminy included a welcome speech by Dr. Al-Khadra and a speech by two architecture students sharing their experincein the past semester; as well as a speech by Dr. Rami Daher - the acting dean of the college, Dr. Daher explained the expectations of the college and the degree plan. the ceremony included an exhibition for the works of the first year students.

(18-1-2007) German Jordanian University signs an agreement with ARAMEX to establish "ARAMEX Center of Excellence for Logistics"

German Jordanian University has signed an agreement with ARAMEX total transportation solutions, to establish 'ARAMEX Center of Excellence for Logistics" aims at exchanging the Academic, Technical and Industrial experiences in this field and direct the outcomes of the logistics program offered by the university according to the local and global needs.

(14-1-2007) Ms Vesna Velickovic introduce a seminar on "Visualization of Mathematics Using Line Graphics"

The school of Informatics and Computing held a seminar on "Visualization of Mathematics Using Line Graphics" by Vesna Velickovic as a vital importance in modern mathematical education. Vesna is a Ph.D candidate at the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Nis.

Event name: University Basketball team will participate in the International University Championship and the Arab University Championship

Event date: Feb. 2008 and April 2008

Event details:

University basketball team left to Aqaba on Thursday 8th of Nov to play friendly matches. The matches are intended to prepare the team for the International University Championship and the Arab University Championship which will be held in Feb. 2008 and April 2008 respectively. We’ll offer follow up news about their accomplishments in the matches when they come back.

Event date: May 2008

Event details: The University Musical Band started training every Thursday to participate in the celebration of all national events. They will also participate in the Inter University Festival which will be held in Petra in May 2008

 


Event name: poetry writing competition

Event date: Thursday 27th December, 2007

Event details: The English Department is running a poetry writing competition and a short story competition soon. Watch for the notices.   The closing date for entry will be Thursday 27th December, 2007.  There will be prizes offered to the winners.  For more information and helpful tips and leaflets contact Ms. Mary O’Brien on mary.obrien@gju.edu.jo

 


The English Department has started conversation classes (beginners only) for the GJU staff members. If anyone is interested in joining, please contact Ms. Mary O’Brien at ext 255.   These classes are aimed at those staff members who feel their language level is very weak.  The objective is to help them achieve a basic level of communication in English and thereby improve their confidence when using the English Language.
