Applied University Teaching – Perspectives for the Future

Workshop descriptions

Workshop 1 – HYBRID: “Methods of Activation for Large Groups in Applied University Teaching”

Teaching in large groups presents teachers with special challenges. How to gain the attention of the many? How to know if – and what – your students are learning in often rather anonymous situations? How can one actively involve everyone?

In the workshop, methods that enable active learning in large groups will be presented and tested. These methods relate to both classroom teaching and online teaching.

The workshop will be conducted by Prof. Dr. Jörg A. Wendorff (Ravensburg-Weingarten University of Applied Sciences / Bavarian Center for Innovative Teaching, Germany)

Workshop 2 – HYBRID: “Active Learning in Online-Teaching”

Do you also suffer from lecturing to black screens when you do online teaching? Would you appreciate more interaction and engagement by your students? In this workshop we will reflect on reasons for student inactivity and learn techniques to ensure active student learning in online teaching formats. This workshop will be highly interactive and participants are expected to actively engage and contribute.

The workshop will be conducted by Prof. Dr. Markus Westner (OTH Regensburg – Technical University of Applied Sciences, Germany)

Workshop 3 – HYBRID: “Getting to Know Your Students (better) – Learning-oriented Initial Situations“

The beginning of a new course is a very special moment. Neither the participants nor the teacher know who and what exactly awaits them in the course. In addition, each participant brings their own individual experiences and expectations, both positive and negative. If the start is successful and all learners can be "picked up", the basic conditions for cooperation among participants, the relationship with the teacher, and learning in the course have already been met.

In this workshop, we will actively learn and try out methods for creating these initial situations with students. We will discuss how these situations can be handled practically to create a good learning setting.

The workshop will be conducted by Matthias Kraut (Hamburg Center for University Teaching and Learning / University of Magdeburg, Germany)

Workshop 4 – HYBRID: “Case-based Teaching Approaches for Universities of Applied Sciences”

The different forms of case study work offer the possibility to let students develop topics in a practical and application-oriented way. In addition to the development of factual topics, case study work also offers the opportunity to “score” in the area of key qualifications, soft skills and self-study. However, the methodical approach of case study work also presents the accompanying teachers with planning and design challenges.

In this workshop, you will learn which specific, selected teaching methods are helpful for the successful processing of case studies. You will transfer the presented methods into your everyday teaching and create a case study-based teaching concept.

The workshop will be conducted by Dr. Stefan Braun (Bavarian Center for Innovative Teaching, Germany)

Workshop 5 – ONLINE-ONLY: “Service Learning as an Instrument for Linking Didactic Theory with Its Practical Application”

Prospective teachers need to apply their theoretical knowledge and build up crucial classroom experience in order to act with confidence and professionalism in all kinds of teaching situations. On the other hand lecturers in a wide variety of classes and subjects all over the world would appreciate to have a teaching assistant by their side. Students and young teachers supervised by their professors would gladly offer this support, especially if seminars take place online thereby gaining the practical experience they lack. This "quid pro quo" approach is known as "service learning". In the workshop, we will generate service learning ideas and plan how to implement them.

The workshop will be conducted by Dr. Annegret Middeke (University of Göttingen), and Dr. Matthias Jung (Institut für Internationale Kommunikation, Düsseldorf & Berlin, Germany)
