Objectives:

Analytical Chemistry is about studying types and quantities of unknown useful compounds like the key ingredients in food, drugs, cosmetics, and other consumables we usually deal with on daily basis. The analysis is performed practically in Analytical Chemistry Lab. In the lab, PCE students learn the following techniques.

  • Recognizing  the different kinds of glassware and the role of each, how it is used in the analysis
  • Samples handling; extraction of the unknown from the ingredients like colorants and preservatives is essential for analysis
  • Learning classical methods of analysis like gravimetric and volumetric methods, in addition to simple separation using column chromatography

 

Syllabus: Statistical treatment of data, titration of strong dibasic base with strong acids (monoprotic and diprotic), titrations of strong acids/bases with weak bases/acids (monoprotic and polyprotic), determination of carbonate and bicarbonate in mixtures, buffer solutions and buffer capacity, EDTA determination of calcium in milk, redox titration of dichromate with iron(II), redox titration of permanganate with oxalate, determination of calcium as calcium oxalate, determination of chloride by Mohr’s method, separation of permanganate and chromate by adsorption chromatography, separation of zinc and magnesium ions by ion exchange chromatography, gravimetric determination of iron as iron oxide.
