We would like to draw your attention, that starting from the first semester of the academic year 2021/2022 onwards, the GJU's compulsory German courses can no longer be taken externally. We kindly ask all GJU students, who are currently attending German courses outside the GJU to enroll in the GLC course system. You will be given time until the week before the official registration period of the first semester of the academic year 2021/2022 to be exempted from German courses according to the current course exemption regulations at GLC, which will be valid until the first semester of the academic year 2021/2022.
Current course exemption regulations regarding German courses at the GLC
The exemption from one or all levels of German (GERL101-GERL302) is possible. A waiver for a certain level will be granted when a student presents a language certificate according to the specifications of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). Only certificates from the following providers (accredited institutes by the German government providing exams according to the CEFR) will be accepted:
ÖSD (Österreichisches Sprachdiplom)
Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz (DSD)
What certificate entitles the student to enroll in which course?
(Currently, a special regulation applies until the beginning of the first semester 2021/2022, which was informed about by e-mail).
- An A1 certificate allows you to enroll in German II (GERL102) if passed with a grade between 60% and 79% (total)
- An A1 certificate with a grade of 80% or higher allows you to enroll in German III (GERL201).
- An A2 certificate allows you to enroll in German IV (GERL202) if passed with a grade between 60% and 79% (total)
- An A2 certificate with a grade of 80% or higher allows you to enroll in German V (GERL301).
- A B1 certificate if passed in two parts allows you to enroll in German IV (GERL202).
- A B1 certificate if passed in two parts with a grade of 80 % and higher allows you to enroll in German V (GERL301).
- A B1 certificate if passed in three parts allows you to enroll in German V (GERL301).
- A complete B1 exam (all four parts passed) allows you to enroll in German VI (GERL302).
- German VI "Intensive" is exclusive for the students who pass the pre-requisite course "German V (GERL301)" with a minimum of two B1 Certificate parts.
All official language certificates must not be older than 12 months at the time the exemption is granted.
When a student presents a B2 certificate or higher they can be exempted from all German courses (German I to German VI) offered at the GLC. The certificate may not be older than 24 months at the time the exemption is granted.
Students can be also exempted by presenting a certificate from one of the below described German partner institutions, acquired after participating in an intensive German language course in Germany.
The certificate must show a "grade" for a particular course examination and not just "attendance". Only certificates from the following partner institutions will be accepted: Universität Kiel, Technische Universität Dresden, IIK Düsseldorf, IIK Berlin, Universität Leipzig, Universität Passau, Universität Mainz / Studienort Germersheim. A certificate from one of our official German partners (as listed above) allows you to enroll in the following levels:
What course result entitles the student to enroll in which GLC course?
Successfully passed course in Germany at level: You can register in:
- A1.1 GERL102
- A1.2 GERL201
- A2.1 GERL202
- A2.2 GERL301
- B1.1 GERL302INT
- B1.2 GERL302REG
What is the procedure to receive an exemption?
Students must present the original language certificate in the week before the registration period at GJU to the contact person below. The exemption will be applicable until the new course exemption regulations will be applied. No later exemption will be granted.
What if the language certificate is older than 12 months on the day of registration for the German Year?
To ensure that all students have the proper German language skills (B1) when they travel for their German year, they have to show verifiable proof that they were enrolled in a German course in the last 12 months before their departure to Germany. The course may be taken on-campus or off-campus.
For example, if a student passed the B2 exam more than 12 months before the start of their German Year, and was subsequently exempted from all German courses, they have to show a certificate of participation in a language course at the B1.2 level or higher. The certificate does not have to be acquired again. For questions or any further inquiries please refer to the following contact person at the German Language Center for assistance:
