Biography

Dr. Ignacio Arce is an architect and archaeologist, specialised in Heritage Conservation and management as well as in Late Antique and Early Islamic material culture.

After postgraduate studies at The International Centre for the Study and Preservation of Cultural Property at Rome in 1993 (ICCROM) as Resident in the Spanish Academy of Rome, and Siena University (in 1995), he got his doctorate in 2004 at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM); his dissertation on the Umayyad Complex at Amman Citadel was awarded Summa Cum Laude, the UPM Extraordinary Prize, and the Doctor Europeus Award.

Later, he was granted a IEF-Marie Curie Scholarship at the University of Copenhagen where he has conducted as PI a research on Khirbat al-Mafjar. As Director of the Spanish Archaeological Mission to Jordan, Dr Arce has also led as PI several projects aimed at the research, excavation, restoration, and presentation of major Roman, Late Antique and Umayyad sites, including projects at the Amman Citadel, Qasr Hallabat complex (shortlisted for the Aga Khan Award), Hammam es-Sarrah, Qusayr ʿAmra, Deir el Kahf, Umm al Jimal, Qastal, Harrane and Khirbet al Mafjar (in collaboration with the Oriental Institute of Chicago, later developed with his Marie-Curie Project). His other projects include the one entitled “Analysis and Documentation of Building Techniques and Architectural Typology in the Transition from Late Antiquity to Umayyad Period in Jordan and Palestine” (funded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and ongoing since 2004), the Anastasius Edict Project (funded by GHS), and the Anastylosis of the gate of Hammam as-Sarrah (also funded by GHS). He has directed the Heritage for Development Programme (funded by the Spanish Agency for International Co-operation-AECID) and has worked as consultant for UNESCO, ICCROM, GCI, WMF and UNDP in Jordan, Siria, Lebanon and Palestine. He has been responsible for the the museologic and museographic projects of the Hallabat and Amman Citadel Site Museums, as well as being author of numerous publications, and visiting professor in several universities. He was bestowed with the Spanish Civil Merit Order Commendation in 2000.

Dr Arce is currently working as Associate Professor at the School of Architecture and Built Environment of the German-Jordanian University in Amman, where he runs a Masters degree on Architectural Conservation.

  • Scientific Direction of the Excavation of the structures identified in the survey (service building and auxiliary structures, including quarry fronts, slaking pits, etc.). Evaluation and documentation of the state of conservation of the structures identified.

  • Inspection, documentation and monitoring of the state of conservation of the Hydraulic System (dams, dykes, saqiyyas and wáter deposits), of the quarries and the auxiliary  structures (service and palatine ones) of the complex.

  • Inspection, documentation and monitoring of the state of conservation of the second saqiyya and the related area. This component included a separate report on the condition of the structure and a proposal of intervention / conservation of the structure.

-Project “Proposal for Upgrading Umayyad Archaeological Sites in Jordan and Improving the Visitors Services”. Research and proposal for UNESCO Regional office in Amman (within UNESCO Programme IV /MLA). Contract with UNESCO to conduct the related research and put forward the proposal within the final report. 2011.

-Project EUROMED III “Al-Qantara Crossing between East and West”. Project Member and Catalog Contributor. Funded by the European Comission. Coordinated by the Jordanian Department of Antiquities. Researcher participant by invitation of the DoA. 2009

  • Partial anastylosis and display design of architectural elements from the Umayyad mosque which were nor rebuilt in the anastylosis of the mosque.

  • Electronic catalogue of the displayed artifacts and those preserved at the Site Museum Storage. This component is being developed in collaboration with the Center for Digital Archaeology (CoDA) of Berkley (California). It has been devised not only as a management tool of the museum collections, but also as an alternative way of presentation to the vistor of the collection in context.

  • Virtual reconstruction with 3D computer generated images for the presentation of the site to the visitor. The project includes, experimental execises of Augmented Reallity as part of the didactic & presentation strategy.
