What are the regulations for the German placement test?

Exception regulation for the participation in obligatory courses German 1 to German 6 at the GJU

Who qualifies for a free placement test at GJU?

Holders of an external German language certificate may participate in a placement test. The certificates that qualify as verification are examination certificates as well as certificates of participation. The certificate must contain the following information:

  • Contact information of the institution,
  • Number of contact hours of the course completed,
  • Period of time of the course completed,
  • German level according to the GER reached at the end of the course,
  • The course must contain a minimum of 30 contact hours.

Any of those information missing will lead to a refusal of the registration request.

Who qualifies for a registration at German 6 without placement test?

Holders of a B1 certificate not older than one year (Goethe-Zertifikat B1, ÖSD-Zertifikat B1, telc Deutsch B1) could register for German 6 without a placement test. German 6 is obligatory because of the application training as well as the technical languages that are included in German 6. If the certificate is older than one year, you may participate in a placement test for a possible registration at German 6.

  • Goethe-Zertifikat B2; C1; C2
  • ÖSD-Zertifikat B2; C1; C2
  • DSH-1, DSH-2; DSH-3

what about students who do a German summer course in Germany

Exclusively for students who do a German course in Germany, a placement test will be offered after their arrival in Jordan. In this case, students need to register through the online system during the registration/add & drop period for the regular German course at GJU they are supposed to register for. If a German level can be skipped according to the placement test, a registration in the higher German course will be initiated by the GLC after the placement examination.

Important note:

Please be aware, that B1-Certificates at the date of the registration for your German Year at the International Office shouldn´t be older than one year!

What the required documents for the registration of the placement test or for request of exemption

For the registration (or request for exemption) please contact:  jens.schmidtke@gju.edu.jo

Only completed courses qualify you to register for a placement test. On going classes can´t be considered! A certificate needs to be submitted.

The registrations will be accepted only within the announced period of time for registration.

The registration process is completed when you receive a confirmation e-mail.

(If you do not have your GJU student ID card yet, then please submit your admittance approval, on which your student ID and personal information is visible. It is the paper you got from the registration department when you first registered at GJU).

The placement tests take place during the add and drop-week for the 1st and 2nd semester and before the summer courses. The dates for the tests and the period for the registration will be announced via e-mail from the Deanship of Student Affairs on this GLC-website or on the GJU Facebook pages:

After the test:

The Registration Department will be informed by the German Language Center, if you can skip a course/courses according to the placement test. The result counts only for the registration period, where the placement test was done. It can´t be shifted to the next semester.

With a language certificate on a higher language level you can again register for a placement test.
