The academic networks at GJU

Bridge- building between Jordan and Germany has since the beginning been GJUs policy. Part of this is also the goal to create sustainability in academic collaboration and a mutual understanding of both cultures. The academic networks are an integral part in achieving this goal. Every school at GJU has its own network of partners in Germany. These network partners, sometimes also including DAAD representatives or industry partners, meet once every year. The meetings are hosted at different German partner universities. Every four years each school will also host a meeting for the network members at GJU. The meetings are organized by the Network Coordinator in close collaboration with the Exchange Coordinator at GJU and the Network head on the German side.

The importance of the yearly network meetings in the context of GJU`s German Dimension

This DAAD funded project is an essential instrument in creating partnerships in line with the strategic goals of GJU. The networks are a platform for academics to discuss and develop new ideas, exchange expertise and experiences and reach out for further funding opportunities. This platform symbolizes the openness at GJU for mutual exchange and communication between the two countries and provides opportunity to learn from each other on multiple levels. The network meetings also often include reports my GJU alumni which of helps to improve student matters and also to observe success stories from GJU graduates. Another positive add on of the network meetings is that other universities than the host venue are often visited during the travels of the Exchange Coordinators to Germany and new partnerships and collaborations are formed as well as existing ones strengthened. The same approach is taken with industry visits which are also often a part of the network meetings and which allow acquisition of knowledge and new contacts for GJU.

Topics discussed and outputs achieved

The yearly meetings of each faculty and its network provide the opportunity for the members to discuss many of the current topics in their field. Agenda topics include curricula development & New Master programs, including the possibility of joint programs and joint teaching, student exchange and the German Year challenges, GJU Mobility programs (Flying Faculty, Staff Mobility Program, Summer School, Student Group Mobility), Erasmus Plus & Research collaboration. It also allows for input on current developments on both sides for example the German partners expertise regarding the German Accreditations that GJU is aiming for or mutual updates regarding digitalization.

The outputs range from the creation of new joint programs and research projects to increased numbers of seats for German Year students. Success of the meetings is also shown though general higher visibility of GJU mobility programs at the partner universities, a higher number of Incoming students at GJU (including Erasmus scholarship holders), a higher number of Flying Faculty professors at GJU and Erasmus staff. The academic networks are an essential link for communication and exchange that aims to strengthen relationships between the two countries and to establish new forms of collaboration.
