New exemption regulations regarding German courses at the GLC

Starting with the academic year 2019/2020, we will no longer provide placement tests at the German Language Center.

However, it is still possible to get exempted from one or all levels of German (GERL101-GERL302).

A waiver for a certain level will be granted when a student presents a language diploma according to the specifications of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). Only diplomas from the following providers will be accepted: Goethe Institute, ÖSD (Österreichisches Sprachdiplom), Telc gGMBH, TestDaF, Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz (DSD) (accredited institutes by the German government providing exams according to the CEFR).

Furthermore, students can be exempted by presenting a certificate from one of the following German partners (see below) for the GJU summer language course scholarship. The certificate has to show a “pass” for a certain course (and not just “attended”). Only certificates from the following partners will be accepted:

1. Universität Kiel

2. Technische Universität Dresden

3. IIK Düsseldorf

4. IIK Berlin

5. Universität Leipzig

6. Universität Passau

7. Universität Mainz / Studienort Germersheim

All official language certificates and course certificates must not be older than 12 months at the time of enrollment in a German class at the GLC.

What certificate entitles to enroll in which course?

  • An A1 certificate allows you to enroll in German II (GERL102) if passed with a grade between 60% and 79% (total)
  • An A1 certificate with a grade of 80% or higher allows you to enroll in German III (GERL201).
  • An A2 certificate allows you to enroll in German IV (GERL202) if passed with a grade between 60% and 79% (total)
  • An A2 certificate with a grade of 80% or higher allows you to enroll in German V (GERL301).
  • If you pass one to three parts of the B1 exam, you can enroll in German V (GERL301)
  • A complete B1 exam (all four parts passed) allows you to enroll in German VI (GERL302)
  •

A certificate from one of our official German partners (as listed above) allows you to enroll in the following levels:

GERL102

A1.2

GERL201

A2.1

GERL202

A2.2

The language course certificate must contain the following information:

  • Contact information of the institute/university
  • Number of contact hours
  • Duration of the course
  • The achieved language level at the end of the course according to the CEFR

All official language certificates and course certificates must not be older than 12 months at the time of enrollment in a German class at the GLC.

What is the procedure to receive an exemption?

Students should present the original language certificate or the course certificate in the week before registration week or in the registration week at the secretary of the German Language Center. The exemption for a certain level is granted as described above. However, the student has to register for the upcoming term, otherwise the exemption will be taken back and the student has to present the certificate again when they want to enroll (given that the certificate is still valid).

After the registration week we will no longer accept certificates for enrollment in the current term.

Under which circumstances can a student be exempted from all German language classes (German I to German VI) at GJU?

When a student presents a B2 certificate or higher they can be exempted from all German courses offered at the GLC. The certificate may not be older than 24 months at the time the exemption is granted. The following certificates are accepted:

  • Goethe- certificate B2; C1; C2
  • ÖSD- certificate B2; C1; C2
  • DSH-1, DSH-2; DSH-3
  • TestDaF-level 3; -level 4; -level 5
  • telc Deutsch B2; C1; C2
  • Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung des Goethe-Instituts  (ZMP)
  • Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung des Goethe-Instituts (ZOP)
  • Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom des Goethe-Instituts (KDS)
  • Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz (DSD), Stufe C1
  • Deutsche Hochschulreife (Abitur) or Fachabitur
  • UNIcert II; III; IV

German native speakers might also be exempted.

Certificates that allow a student to get exempted from all German courses must be presented at the International Office at the time the student officially applies for the German year.

To ensure that all students have the proper German language skills (B1) when they travel for their German year they have to show verifiable proof that they were enrolled in a German course in the 12 months prior to their departure to Germany. The course may be taken on campus or off campus.

For example, if a student passed the B2 exam more than 12 months before the start of their German year, and was subsequently exempted from all German courses, they have to show a certificate of participation in a language course at the B1.2 level or higher.

Presentation of a B1 certificate (or higher) significantly increases the chance to receive a scholarship for the German year. Accepted certificates are listed in section 3.
