On Monday 24th of April 2017, the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany, Mr.Sigmar Gabriel accompanied by the German ambassador and cultural delegation, visited the School of Architecture and Built Environment at GJU.
The minister met with GJU’s president, Dr. Natheer Abu Obied, and Vice President, Dr. Manar Fayyad in addition to Syrian refugees and Jordanian students, who obtained scholarships from the German Foreign Ministry and German Academic for Exchange Services (DAAD).
Mr. Gabriel valued Jordan’s role in welcoming and assisting Syrian refugees; pointing to the necessity of providing more support to the refugee’s situation. He also, discussed with the students their education progress and listened to their experience in pursuing scholarships, and challenges faced.
From his side, Abu Obied stated the importance of the German’s support to Jordanian students and Syrian refugees, especially with the Architectural Conservation master program, and the Professional Diploma Social Work: “Migration and Refugees”, that support Syrians with the right skills to help and rebuild their country when they return.
At the end of the meeting, the two parties discussed future collaborations between the university and German cultural and educational institutions.
During the visit the Cultural Delegation president of German Archaeological Inst. Prof. Fless, president of DAAD Prof. Wintermantel, President Helmholtz Society Prof. Wiestler, Dr. Salamander and Dr. Seligmann took a tour at the school and were introduced to some of the student’s graduation projects
