On Saturday the 21st of April 2018, GJU students Mohammed Hababeh and Omar Tuffaha from SEEIT won third place in Umniah’s Internet of Things hackathon for their product idea to create IoT based E-Ink displays for electronic signage. The goal of the idea was to provide electronic displays for signage systems as a replacement to frequently and manually replaced paper or even plastic based systems. This electronic display system can also be updated remotely from the internet and does not require any external power or recharging. The product idea has multiple application areas such as price tags in grocery stores, name tags and room signs in office buildings. The product idea also has potential to be expanded into many other areas.

In the same hackathon, a total of four students from GJU participated with three product ideas. There was GJU student Abdulrahman Alshawakri from SEEIT and his partner that participated with their product idea to provide a predictive tracking system for public transportation. Finally, GJU student Mohammed Qanadilo from SATS and his partner participated with their product idea of a lunch box that preserves food at a low temperature and then preheats it when it needs to be eaten.

At Umniah’s Internet of Things hackathon, participants work to come up with preliminary solutions for IoT product ideas. The hackathon is organized by IBTECAR and conducted on regular basis in the The Tank Jo in building 23 in the King Hussien Business Park. The hackathon is geared towards all skill levels. Participants can join as team, or even build a team during the hackathon. If participants require hardware, all basic hardware that necessary for their projects is provided. Hackathon winners are determined by a panel of judges comprised of IoT professionals and entrepreneurs. Following the hackathon, all participants are given access to a 6 month IoT innovation program fully funded by The Tank Jo.

We wish our students all the success and encourage others to always engage in such oppurtunities.
