Amman- 26 May 2019

On Thursday 23 May 2019, the EDU-Syria Project, managed by the German Jordanian University (GJU) and funded by the EU, through the EU Regional Trust Fund in response to the Syrian crisis, the EU 'Madad' Fund, organised an Iftar banquet for 250 students affiliated with the Program.

The Iftar banquet took place at Zarqa University in the presence of the German Jordanian University President Prof. Manar Fayyad, and representatives of the EU Delegation to Jordan. The Chairman of the University’s Board of Directors and the President of Zarqa University also attended the event.

The banquet included a variety of music and cultural activities by the Program’s students.

The Iftar aimed at bringing together students who benefitted from the Project and all those involved in providing educational assistance. It also highlighted the commitment of the EU towards helping Syrian refugees cope with the humanitarian crisis.

About the EU Regional Trust Fund in response to the Syrian crisis, the EU 'Madad' Fund:

Since its establishment in December 2014, an increasing share of the EU’s non-humanitarian aid for Syria’s neighbouring countries is provided through the EU Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis, the EU 'Madad' Fund. The Trust Fund brings a more coherent and integrated EU aid response to the crisis and primarily addresses longer term economic, educational, protection and social needs of Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries such as Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq, and supports overstretched host communities and their administrations. Today, the EU Regional Trust Fund is also one of the key instruments through which the new EU partnership priorities with Jordan and Lebanon are implemented. https://ec.europa.eu/trustfund-syria-region/

About the EDU-Syria Project:

EDU-Syria is an EU project, funded through the EU Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis, which helps Syrian refugees in Jordan and vulnerable Jordanians from host communities get access to higher education through a set of scholarship programs.

The EU granted the German Jordanian University (GJU) a total of Euros 15 Million, enabling 1,400 students to enroll in higher education institutions in Jordan.

The Project is managed by GJU in partnership with Jordan University of Science and Technology, Yarmouk University, Zarqa University and Luminous Technical University College.

The Project also cooperates closely with Jordanian institutions that help vulnerable Jordanians such as the National Aid Fund, Tkiyet Um Ali and Al-Aman Fund.
