On Tuesday 6th of March 2018, The School of Applied Humanities and Languages(SAHL)- the Department of Social Work at the German Jordanian University (GJU),  celebrated the launch of “English for Social work: A Bilingual Terminology Handbook” developed with the cooperation of the University of Vechta in Germany.

President of GJU Prof. Manar Fayyad said that the book was developed to solve an enormous linguistic challenge in which most of the students enrolled in the social work programs are not native speakers in English besides to the fact that their undergraduate studies in Arabic.

Fayyad thanked the team who accomplished this project coordinated by former Dean of SAHL Dr. Johen Pleines, within less than 10 months, mentioning the support of GIZ project “New Perspective through Academic Education and Training for Young Syrians and Jordanian (JOSY)” commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Project Manager of the GIZ JOSY project, Henner Krichner appreciated the hard work of all professors, lecturers and translators from Germany and Jordan, expressing his pride to support both GJU and Vechta University with financing of the translation.

The Dean of SAHL, Dr. Christin Hildebrandt stated that the book aimed to collect material and vocabulary on an international level to get the basic understanding of professional expressions of social work so that a dialog and an understanding is enabled with Arabic speaking professionals.  

Translation’s team that included Mr. Magnus Frampton, Dr. Rawan Ibrahim, Dr. Sahar Al-Makhamreh and Lina Al-Samaraee conducted a presentation giving insights into the author’s translation workshop.

Ms. Maha Ghatatsheh, Institute for Family Health at Nour AL Hussein Foundation and a graduate of the GJU Professional Diploma “Social Work for Refugees and Migration presented comments from the user’s perspective.

It is worthy to mention that the bilingual terminology handbook will be available free of charge to interested universities, specialist institutes, NGOs, projects, academics, professionals and students.
