On Sunday 22nd of July 2018, the School of Natural Resources Engineering (SNREM), at the German Jordanian University (GJU), organized a seminar on “Sustainable Management of the Natural Resources Elements”, in cooperation with GIZ Jordan and the Ministry of Environment.

The seminar aims to the mainstream of the ecosystem service approach and networking among Universities of Jordan, where Dr. Oliver Schlein Project Coordinator at GIZ, conducted an introduction of the use of ecosystem services in Jordan. He explained the vulnerability of ecosystem in Jordan, which is affected by certain elements such as desertification, land degradation, overgrazing and a rapidly growing population.

Schlein demonstrated the benefits people obtain from ecosystems and the main three results of the project in the areas of national policy, awareness raising, networking, and field case studies, indicating the faculties and universities that should be involved in the project, such as Agriculture, Economy, Tourism and Heritage, Water Management and Mass Communication- Journalism.

GJU’s Professors participated in the seminar where they displayed presentations on ‘Energy, Water and Food Nexus application in the Jordan Vally” by Dr. Mohammad Al Addous, “Sustainable watershed and water resources management in Petra’ by Dr. Qasem Abd AlAl and “Sustainable water resources management in Jordan” by Dr. Mohammad Al Smadi.

It is worthy to mention that Director of Urban Studies Division Deema Abu Thiab from Urban Planning Center participated in the seminar, by presenting a presentation on Sustainable management of the natural resources elements from the urban planning point of view, the case of Dibbin.

At the end, Dean of SNREM, Dr. Munjed Al Sharif led an open discussion between the students and the guests.
