On Thursday 14th of December 2017, The School of Natural Resources Engineering and Management (SNREM) at the German-Jordanian University (GJU), organized a workshop on "Waste Management in Refugee- Receiving Communities" with the participation of a number of Jordanian public universities, German universities, local companies and industries, Jordanian ministries and the Greater Amman Municipality, supported by GIZ.

In her speech, the president of GJU Prof. Manar Fayyad said that GJU focuses on  applied education and research that is closely related to the current problems and challenges facing our societies such as the refugees problem, which has affected Jordan, neighboring countries and Europe greatly and caused lots of pressures including natural resources.

She added that waste generation is an important issue and needs more attention, especially with regard to its management.

She pointed out that the workshop will focus on how to transform waste into useful energy which requires research, capacity building and cooperation between universities, partners and all concerned parties.

The Dean of (SNREM), Dr. Munjid Al Shareef, said that the overall objectives of the project are to promote sustainable waste management through capacity building and to develop the ability to analyze recyclables after the initial waste treatment for further reuse.

He added that the representatives of German universities will visit the GIZ in Amman and the participating Jordanian universities: Mutah University, the University of Science and Technology and the University of Jordan to coordinate the activities associated with the project and meet with university professors to learn about teaching methods and scientific research, in addition to visiting the targeted project areas, companies and ministries.

It is worthy to mention that the project will include several practical and academic issues, including the development of concepts for integration of waste management in existing bachelor and master programs, Analysis of cooperation on an academic level with application relevance and research to study the labor market and its needs in waste management areas.
