Introduction 

The School of Architecture and Built Environment (SABE) was established in 2006 offering one B.Sc. Program in the Department of Architecture and Interior Architecture. In 2008, the School expanded to three more departments:

1. Department of Architecture and Interior Architecture
2. Department of Design and Visual Communication
3. Department of Architectural Conservation

In addition to its academic departments, SABE launched the Road Safety Centre of Excellence in 2008. The Centre was established in partnership with Greater Amman Municipality, Ministry of Municipal Affairs, and Hikmat Road Safety Corporation . It carries on the message of the national strategy for road safety along with active actors in the field. The Centre provides training courses in Road Safety Auditing, and is planning to offer a Professional Diploma Degree in the field.

In 2009, SABE received Al-Hassan Award for Scientific Excellence for adopting Innovative Teaching and Learning Approaches and Methodologies in its programs, as well as for the role of the Road Safety Centre of Excellence in supporting the effective execution of the National Road Safety Strategy.

The School offers unique programs at the Bachelor and Masters levels as follows:
1. The Department of Architecture and Interior Architecture offers:
(1) An Undergraduate program: B.Sc. in Architecture.
(2) A Postgraduate program: M.Sc. in Spatial Planning.

2. The Department of Design and Visual Communication offers:
(1) An Undergraduate program: B.A. in Design and Visual Communication

3. The Department of Architectural Conservation will offer, in 2010/2011:
(1) A Postgraduate program: M.Sc. in Architectural Conservation


The programs offered at SABE are based on an applied model of education that integrates academia with practice. These programs provide students with proper work opportunities in professional offices as part of the Study Plan. Students learn how the professions work by obtaining direct knowledge from professionals. They come to grasp the expectations, opportunities, and reality of the career. By graduation time, they will be valuable professionals. Graduates from the offered programs are expected to be highly employable and to obtain the best starting salaries in Jordan and the region.


Through its interactive teaching-learning environment, the School encourages diverse thinking and use of multi-intelligences and places emphasis on teamwork, networking, and cooperation between education and industry. It prepares its graduates for critical involvement with real practice and enhances their awareness and sensitivity to social responsibilities, intercultural communication, sustainability and environmental intervention, to the benefits of research and innovation.

Goals 

Intended School goals are:

1. To graduate young professionals with critical thinking abilities and theoretical and creative approaches, capable of utilizing different tools, communication skills and techniques, and of working in interactive team environments within a realistic market-driven education.
2. To empower graduates with a professional base through local and international affiliations and internship programs, and involvement of practitioners in the learning process.
3. To facilitate applied research activities through industry links, centers of excellence, research projects, and post-graduate studies.
4. To enrich the learning experience through jointly-prepared study plans, joint degree programs, cooperation projects, excursions and travel, international visiting faculty, and one-year academic exchange with the university consortiums of German speaking countries.

The Programs offered by the School of Architecture and Built Environment are unique in nature. Programs offered provide students with proper job opportunities in professional fields as part of the Study Plans. Students learn how the profession works and obtain direct knowledge of professional practices. SABE students meet the expectations and opportunities, and gain a realistic perspective on career interests and aptitudes. By graduation, they will be valuable professionals. 


Educational outcomes

1. Key knowledge: School graduates will be able to design, provide, and evaluate visual products, buildings and their interiors, and urban project presented at different scales, to pay attention to aesthetics, function, theory, and construction.

2. Skills: School graduates will be able to understand, interpret, explain, analyze, and assess various products forms and topologies.

3. Values: School Graduates will come to realize expectations, opportunities and realities of the profession.
