English Department Goal Statement
English is the language of instruction at the German-Jordanian University. Therefore all new students are required to use and develop their language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking, purposefully and articulately. The aim is well-educated and informed students who are equipped to take responsibility for their own learning while at the same time having a sense of pride in their identity and appreciation of their own and others worth.
All new students are required to take a placement test in the first semester of enrollment. We provide six levels: Engl 098 / Engl 099 / Engl 101 / Engl 102 / Engl 201 and Engl 202. All students must take Engl 201 nd Engl 202 as a university requirement in order to graduate.
Classes are given by native speakers or near-native speakers of English whenever possible to ensure that students achieve maximum benefit.
It is important for the English Department to educate students to function beyond university life in their future workplaces. That is why each level incorporates activities that encourage team work with frequent group activities as well as practicing oral presentation skills and the ability to deliver a speech.
The policy of the English Department can be summed up in the following quotation from the Irish poet William Butler Yeats.
“Education is not so much the filling of a pail, as the lighting of a fire.”
