On Thursday the 15th of May 2014, The German Jordanian University signed a cooperation agreement with Greater Amman Municipality in order to revive and restore the house of the Former Prime Minister, Ibrahim Hashim, within the plan to preserve the heritage houses in Amman.

 

Aqel Biltaji, the Greater Amman Municipality Mayor said that this agreement embodies the partnership with the university and the local community of this project to strengthen its efforts in preserving the cultural and historical heritage of Amman and keep it for the future generations.

 

He emphasized that the Greater Amman Municipality has expanded the scope of the heritage areas in Amman to preserve its legacy and history to include Jabal Al Hussein, Jabal Al.Lawibdeh , Jabal Al.Joufah and the downtown area.

 

He also pointed out that GJU students will be responsible for maintaining the historical heritage of Amman with the help of a group of architects and engineers from theGreater Amman Municipality.

 

For his part, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University Eng. Othman Bedier thanked the Greater Amman Municipality for the approval of the convention to embrace the house of Ibrahim Hashim and restore it.

 

Prof. Natheer Abu. Obeid emphasized that this project reflects the civilized and the urban face of the university, and confirms its existence as an actor in Amman.

 

He added that the site is also a convenient place for the School of Architecture and Built Environment to teach the students in this historical atmosphere.

 

Prof. Abu Obeid hoped that this project will contribute positively in advancing the economic development in the region, pointing out that the university is always proud to have partnerships with the Greater Amman Municipality to serve Amman.

 

Mr. Fawzan Khlaf, a member of the Council of the Greater Amman Municipality,   expressed his pride of this project, which will contribute to develop the capital and bring life to it.

 

Under the agreement, the university will work on the restoration and rehabilitation of the Ibrahim Hashim’s house and will document it  historically and architecturally and use it in their study programs, in addition to  activate it by art, architectural and cultural exhibitions. 

 

It is worth mentioning that Ibrahim Hashim was the Head of the Executive Council and Prime Mnister of Jordan several times, starting in 1933 and was killed during mob violence in Baghdad at the outbreak of the Iraqi revolution in May 1958.
