            THESIS: For the vacancies formation in Palladium during hydrogen loading with using a quartz balance.

                          (Zur Leerstellenbildung in Pd bei Wasserstoffbeladung unter Verwendung einer Quarzwaage).

In my Diploma Thesis, I investigated the formation of vacancies in Palladium during hydrogen loading with using a quartz balance (QB). It describes a type of quartz balance, which was designed primarily to estimate the vacancies concentration in Pd by hydrogen charging and developed. This QB is generally suitable for other metals.

Furthermore, I examined the overall relative volume change of the sample during loading till CH= 0.4 and the relative lattice parameter change. This technique of generating a vacancies and their measurement with the quartz balance describes a good method for the in situ measurement. The lattice parameters aα und aβ were determined and grain sizes using the Scherrer formula from XRD measurement.

SKILLS

Using of electron microscopes:

  • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

▪ The loaded and unloaded Palladium and Nickel samples were examined in the nanometer range by using the electron microscopy (SEM), to determine whether the grains were in the interior free from dislocations or contain many dislocations.

  • Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).

▪ Further experimental investigations were carried out to observe the dislocations and other defects caused by the hydrogen loading by using the microscopy (TEM) and compared them with images of unloaded samples. The unloaded samples were on the nanometer scale assayed with the electron microscope to determine whether the grain inside was free of dislocations or contain many dislocations. The recordings of the ex-situ samples of palladium-loaded point out that there may be some sporadic dislocation networks and stacking faults within the grains. The dislocation density is about

▪ The lattice parameters of the palladium-samples were determined before and after the hydrogen loading at various concentrations by XRD measurements
