Leading global online food delivery marketplace hellofood has announced the winner of its scholarship scheme aimed at cultivating the spirit of leadership and entrepreneurship among Jordan’s university students.
Omar Hassan, a Mechatronics Engineering student at the German Jordanian University scooped the JD 500 prize for his proposed solution to make textbooks available at affordable prices for Jordan’s student community through an online portal called Kitabook.
hellofood’s Excellence Scholarship scheme recognised Hassan for entrepreneurial talent and leadership ability based on a submitted essay outlining and innovatively solving a community problem.
Hassan’s Kitabook idea would connect Jordan’s student community to facilitate the renting, exchange and purchase of textbooks. Hassan also solves online payment issues for students, given that most don’t have a credit card or bank account. “Students will be able to buy credit for their Kitabook account. Any transactions will see Kitabook deduct money from the account, and physically pay the student who is renting out his textbook,” he said.
Kitabook’s student community will also benefit from regular and VIP membership cards, which Hassan plans to sell to generate revenue to sustain his project.
“Kitabook will help not only students by decreasing the price of their textbooks but also will help the owners of old textbooks by giving them a chance to recycle them and turn a profit,” Hassan added.
hellofood’s Excellence Scholarship accepted entries up to September 30th 2014, with candidates submitting a brief essay identifying a specific problem in Jordan’s community and offering a viable solution.
Commenting on the Scholarship Excellence’s success in getting students to submit original ideas showing entrepreneurial spirit and leadership ability, Managing Director of hellofood Middle East Beschir Hussain said, “We are delighted at the response hellofood’s Excellence Scholarship got from Jordan’s student community. We were impressed by the number and quality of submissions that we received, which only strengthened our belief that the country’s students have tremendous talent that only needs to be nurtured and showcased through viable opportunities.”
As per hellofood’s Excellence Scholarship guidelines, Hassan’s winning essay did not exceed one A4 page in length, and was adjudged the winner by a three-member jury drawn from hellofood’s top management tiers.
Speaking about Hassan’s success story,GJU’sDirector of the Office for Industrial Links Britta Kähler said, “We are delighted that a student from the German Jordanian University beat off stiff countrywide competition to win this significant accolade. Initiatives like the hellofood Excellence Scholarship are incredibly helpful in allowing students a platform to show their skills, abilities, and capacity for original thought to prominent employers in the industry. University campuses across the country are full of students with great potential, and we’re extremely pleased that Omar Hassan from one of our university’s engineering departments was given a chance to successfully demonstrate what he’s capable of.”
