Under the patronage of HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal, and represented by HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan,  the German Jordanian University organized the 1st International Conference on Open Source Software Computing, in partnership with TEMPUS (Trans-European Mobility Programme for University Studies).  Around 150 participants from 20 countries attended the opening ceremony held on 10 September 2015, at GJU Campus. Delegations from Jordanian, Lebanese, German, British and Spanish universities participated in the event.

 

The project aims to enforce the use of open source software in the IT field across Jordan and Lebanon, by supplying students with the required skills, thus giving them a better chance for a prosper future career, and help them contribute in modernizing the IT field. Universities are considered a center for excellence in open source computing, by providing support for local private and public companies. The project also aims at improving the cooperation between universities and local institutions.

 

In the framework of the Conference, several research and dialogue sessions will be given by renown speakers and decision-makers, experts and scholars from Arab and European countries, which confirms the sustainability of the dialogue towards the development of the use of open software and enhances its applications in many aspects of life.

 

The International Conference is a scientific platform to promote dialogue among the participants, experts, researchers and decision-makers to cooperate in the development of open software, in addition to identifying the issues of research and education-related matters, which are based on creativity and leadership in many aspects and fields, including energy, water, environment and other applications.

 

Prof. Natheer Abu Obeid, GJU President, explained the importance of the conference, which lies in the diversity of participants and the quality of open applications and software, and that this initiative will contribute to the development of the telecommunications and information technology sectors in Jordan and reduce the use of software licenses in many sectors and promote employment opportunities for graduates of communications software and information technology, as well to contribute to the promotion of open software market and the related business sector.
