Berlin- March 29th, 2017

GJU Vice President for International Affairs Prof. Dorit Schumann was invited as an expert to the German Parliament (Deutscher Bundestag) to discuss the “Internationalisation of Higher Education, Science and Research”.

During the meeting, the chair of the board Patricia Lips spoke about the necessity of aims and goals for internationalisation in higher education and scientific research.

For her part , Prof. Schumann emphasized the importance of the trans- and bi-national education and universities. One important effect of TNB projects and bi-national universities such as GJU is the intercultural communication and understanding between Germany and Jordan – or in an even wider context between Europe and the Middle-East.

“Young adults who have the chance to study, live and work in another international region are intercultural ambassadors for friendship, peace, and global challenges.” Prof. Schumann said.

She also mentioned the importance of the funding for transnational education and scholarships for refugees in the Arab region via the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), which come from different Ministries, such as from the Ministry of Higher Education (BMBF) and the Federal Foreign Office (AA).

Prof. Schumann worked out strengths and challenges in Germany for internationalisation in higher education and research with a focus on bi-national universities, the applied character of international oriented universities and the Middle-East.

As some challenges among others she addresses the need of long-term institutionalization and transnational education strategies, the potentials of collaboration between the international oriented universities and organizations, the dilemma of “market orientation” versus “global challenges and SDGs” in international research projects, and adequate nation-wide conditions for the mobility of professors.
