The Research Ethics Section (RES) plays a pivotal role in ensuring adherence to ethical standards and regulations within the research activities conducted at the German Jordanian University (GJU). This section involves overseeing the review process of research proposals, providing guidance to researchers on ethical considerations, and promoting a culture of research integrity across GJU.
Key Responsibilities of the RES
1. Management of the Ethics Review Process at GJU
- Establishing an institutional review board (IRB) that satisfies the requirement of the ministry of health in Jordan.
- Coordinate and facilitate the review process for research proposals involving human subjects, animals, or sensitive data.
- Ensure timely and thorough evaluation of research protocols by the institutional review board (IRB).
- Maintain accurate records of all research protocols, correspondence, and decisions related to the ethics review process.
2. Developing Policies and Compliance Mechanisms
- Stay updated on relevant regulations, guidelines, and best practices pertaining to research ethics, including those set forth by regulatory bodies and funding agencies.
- Develop, implement, and revise policies and procedures at GJU that are related to research ethics in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
- Monitor compliance with established ethical standards and recommend corrective actions as needed.
3. Education and Training
- Organize and conduct workshops, seminars, and training sessions to educate faculty, students, and researchers on ethical principles, regulatory requirements, and responsible conduct of research.
- Provide guidance and resources to support researchers in the development of ethically sound research proposals and methodologies.
4. Consultation and Support
- Serve as a primary point of contact for researchers seeking guidance on ethical issues related to their research projects.
- Offer confidential consultation to researchers facing ethical dilemmas, and assist in the resolution of such issues in accordance with established procedures.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and external experts to address complex ethical challenges arising in research endeavors.
5. Ethical Oversight and Monitoring
- Conduct periodic audits and assessments to ensure ongoing compliance with ethical standards and regulatory requirements.
- Investigate allegations of research misconduct or non-compliance with ethical guidelines, and coordinate appropriate responses in accordance with the policies of GJU.
- Maintain confidentiality and impartiality in handling sensitive information and ethical inquiries.
