During my six-week stay at the German Language Centre of the GJU in Madaba, I had the opportunity to gain valuable insight into my future profession by completing an internship consisting of over 150 hours contact time. My tasks included classroom observations, as well as lessons conducted both jointly with my supervisor, and entirely on my own. This allowed me to take on virtually all of the tasks and responsibilities associated with the profession.
The internship lasted from February until early March and provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the practical realities of teaching German as a foreign language in adult education. Above all, the experience reaffirmed my choice of career, which could be considered its most valuable outcome.
I owe my deepest gratitude and respect to the various people who made this experience so special. I would like to thank my experienced colleagues, who were always willing to help and offer advice, for allowing me to draw inspiration from their own skillsets and experience. What touched me most, in fact, was seeing their reactions to my personal and professional development. When I was able to implement some of their phenomenal advice in my own lessons, they expressed genuine happiness at my progress. I would also like to thank my dear students, who made my experience all the better. Although it was challenging to recognize and respond to heterogeneous learning prerequisites in the beginning, I could’ve not imaged a better group of people to start my professional journey with.
What I took away from this internship is that designing lessons by drawing on the didactic and methodological toolkit acquired during my studies is not something one simply masters, but an ongoing process of approximation that can really only be refined and adapted through gaining more experience. As my supervisors aptly put it, the joy of teaching lies in the fact that one is constantly learning along the way.
I’d like to express my gratitude for the extraordinary warmth of my colleagues at the GLC! They welcomed me, supported me whenever they could, and included me in a way that showed genuine care and respect. The German Language Centre truly left a lasting impression on me.
As I am returning to Germany to complete my studies, I would also like to sincerely thank the faculty for their patience and continued support, and for their generosity in every regard. I wish the students success and fulfilment and I will always treasure my memories with them.
Best wishes
