Biography
Rami Farouk Daher, Ph. D., M. Arch., B.Sc. Rami Daher Rami Daher is Associate Professor at the School of Architect and Built Environment at the German Jordanian University (GJU) and a practicing architect and general director at TURATH: Architecture & Urban Design Consultants. He taught at the American University of Beirut's Department of Architecture & Design; at Texas A&M’s College of Architecture, and at Jordan University of Science & Tech (holding position of Department Head between 2003 and 2006). Daher had earned a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Jordan (1988), a Master of Architecture from the University of Minnesota (1991), a PhD in Architecture from Texas A&M U (1995), and was a recipient of a FULBRIGHT Scholarship through which he did his post-doctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley (2001). Daher is a co-founder and a principal of TURATH: Architecture & Urban Design Consultants (1999-present), and Metropolis: Cities Research Council (2008- Present), the research arm of TURATH. At TURATH, Daher had led several key projects on urban regeneration and public space design, heritage conservation & management, adaptive reuse of heirtage sites, urban planning, and other in Amman and in the region. Furthermore, Daher had also led projects on the preparation of conservation mangement plans, and nomination files of various sites to the World Heriage.
 
Daher is a recipient of a Certificate in Historic Preservation (1995) from the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University. Since 1999, Daher has been appointed as a faculty Fellow at the Center for Heritage Conservation, College of Architecture, Texas A&M University. In addition, Daher has been awarded (2002) an International Collaborative Research Grant (ICRG) from the Program on the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC). Between 2012-15, Daher has served on the Research Grants selection committee of the Arab Council for Social Sciences (ACSS) and since 2015 he has been elected to the board of trustees of the Council and served as its Chair between 2017-19. Daher is also the recipient of the prestigious Arab award: Abdelhamid Shouman Award for Arab Researchers for its 35th Cycle for the Category of Engineering Sciences/Conservation & Restoration of Historic Buidllings. Daher is also the recipient of the Arab Architects Award (2018) in the category “Rehabilitation” for the adaptive reuse of Amman’s historic Electricity Hangar project.
Daher co-edited with Irene Maffi The Politics and Practices of Cultural Heritage in the Middle East: Positioning the Material Culture in Contemporary Societies (I. B. Tauris 2014). He also co-edited with Myriam Ababsa Cities, Urban Practices, and Nation Buildings in Jordan (IFPO, 2011), and edited Tourism in the Middle East: Continuity
 

Change and Transformation (Channel View Publications. 2007). Daher’s ongoing research and publications investigate the politics and dynamics of public place making and of conservation of cultural heritage; levels of place understanding including typological and typo-morphological and their effects on nature of intervention within historic settings; neoliberal urban transformations in the region; and cultural heritage definition, conservation, adaptive reuse, and management.
