Research Interests

Dr. Sbeih is an experienced researcher in the field of experimental condensed matter physics with a focus on the fabrication and characterization of polymeric materials, surface preparation, and characterization.

She started this during her masters’ studies with Prof. Awad al-Zihlif at the University of Jordan (2007) when performing optical and electrical characterization of polymer/clays composites. She studied the effect of particles grain sizes on AC electrical properties and the optical characteristics. For these studies, she measured and analyzed the impedance and UV spectra for the studied composites.

During her Ph.D. studies with Prof. Michael Morrow and Prof. Anand Yethiraj at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada (2013), she successfully synthesized NIPAM polymers form protonated and deuterated monomers. She was able to control the structure and composition of the obtained polymeric systems by changing their crosslinking density and deuterium labeling through the polymerization reaction. She characterized the polymers’ bonds dynamics at the molecular level by using solid state deuterium NMR and mapped their pressure-temperature phase diagrams. She has also studied their viscosity behavior by doing steady and oscillatory rheological measurements. Also, she corelated the microscopic and macroscopic behaviors of these systems through the dynamic light scattering where she obtained the particles sizes and indicated the phase transition temperature.

After being hired as an assistant professor in the department of physics in the school of basic sciences and humanities (SBSH) at GJU (2018) she has established a collaboration with the Max-Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPIP) in Germany. There she started developing her skills in the fabrication and characterization of super liquid-repellent surfaces by using polymers. She worked with Prof. Hans-Juergen Butt on the project of solid surfaces electrification phenomena through charge separation in moving droplets. She measured the charging of superhydrophobic surfaces when changing the ionic strength of the sliding water droplets. Also, she has worked with Prof. Werner Steffen and Dr. Michael Kappl on the fabrication of durable LFS coatings for superamphiphobic surfaces. Dr. Sbeih has been awarded visiting scholar grants to the MPIP in 2019, 2021, and 2022.

After being awarded a SEED grant from the deanship of scientific research DSR-GJU in 2020, Dr. Sbeih has successfully established her research lab at GJU, the Interface wetting lab (G101). The lab consists of a contact angle goniometer, ultrapure water system, oxygen plasma generator, filtered nitrogen air gun, chemical vapor deposition set up, and peristaltic pump.

Dr. Sbeih has collaborations with faculty members in GJU from other schools such as (SATS) where she employs her expertise in polymers for the fabrication of microfluidics and optimizing their functionality. She also performs training sessions for interested students in GJU. She has also co-supervised graduation projects.

The focus of dr. Sbeih’s current research is in studying the interfacial interactions of polymers, mainly the charging at solid surfaces due to sliding water droplets. Furthermore, she is interested in the fabrication and characterization of super repellent surfaces employing coatings of NPs/polymers and their potential applications in many industries.
