On Monday, December 10, 2018, the School of Applied Humanities and Languages (SAHL) – Social Work Department at the German Jordanian University (GJU), organized whole day activities within the campaign “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” in collaboration with the National Council for Women Affairs.

The day included an awareness lecture and two workshops for GJU students on self-defense training with a specialized trainer and an open discussion session about gender-based violence and the potential solution with experienced social workers organized by The Master & Diploma student of Social Work Dept.

The Vice President of GJU Prof. Dorit Schumann, Dean of SAHL Dr. Christine Huth-Hildebrandt, Head of Social Work Department Dr. Sahar Makhamreh and GJU’s students, attended the lecture.

Prof. Schumann stressed that all kinds of violence are considered global concerns. She pointed to the importance of self-resilience and constructive dialogue as essential tools to react against violence.

In her speech, Dr. Christine urged all concerned parties to collaborate collectively to raise awareness towards all forms of violence against women.

Mrs. Maali Al- Naimat from the National Council for Women Affairs explained the roles and responsibilities of the council and presented the results of a scientific study that was conducted on a female sample in Jordan to reflect in figures the size and extent of sexual harassment phenomenon.

Samar Al- Shahwan from Women Helping Women discussed the phenomenon from the social angle demonstrating sexual harassment kinds and the cultural restrictions in reporting harassment.

Dr. Lina al-Jazawi, a researcher and specialist in women's affairs, explained the difficulties surrounding the discussion of women's issues in general, pointing to the impact of these difficulties on women and society.

Dr. Hassan Abu Arqoub from the General Iftaa’ Department and Bothaina Fraihat from the National Center for Human Rights also discussed the issue with the audience
