Amman- 21 March,2017

GJU organized the 8th International Renewable Energy Congress IREC 2017, funded by Scientific Research Support Fund, with the collaboration of Sfax University in Tunisia and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Vice President Dr. Manar Fayyad said that Jordan and many countries in the region are poor in natural resources, therefore it’s important to focus on renewable energy especially solar energy. She added that this area still needs more researches and studies to be adopted, so conferences like this are essential to establish networking and exchange knowledge between different institutions to utilize from each other’s experiences.

She also explained that Jordan’s regulations for utilizing Solar Energy and connecting to the grid have already been established, emphasizing that the PV project at GJU main campus in Madaba will be ready by mid-July and the cost recovery expected to take less than 2 years, with 90% coverage on the electricity bill.

Chairman of Committee Prof. Ahmad Harb said that The main objective of IREC is to gather scientists from all over the world to discuss the latest topics related to renewable energies, such as PV, Wind, Smart Grid, Solar Thermal, Biomass, Fuel Cells, and Control linear and nonlinear in all kind of renewable energies, where it provides a forum for researchers, academicians, scientists and industrial professionals around the world on recent developments.

The congress that last for three days will include four topics in “Distributed Smart Solar Conversion to Enable Smart-Grid Applications” presented by Director of Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) Prof. Issa Batarseh,  “Wide Bandgap Power Electronics: Enabling More Efficient Renewable Energy Systems” by Prof. John Shen from Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago, “Wind energy utilization and related storage aspects” by Prof. Rolf E. Hanitsch from Technical University of Berlin, and “Solar and Wind Cost Reduction Potential” by Prof. Robert Pitz-Paal from DLR Institute of Solar Research, Germany.

140 papers were accepted among 200 received from 28 Arabic and International countries. Some papers will be selected to be published in a certain Scientific Journals that were selected previously by the IREC committee.
