An open day has been held at Zarqa University to introduce the education program for Syrian refugees and Jordanian youth in areas of displaced refugees, which is run by the German Jordanian University and funded by the European Union in collaboration with Zarqa University, Yarmouk University, and Al Quds College.
The president of ZU, Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Al Wadi, pointed out that this open day is the first of its kind in Jordan and it offers educational services for Syrian and Jordanian youth, and that ZU is ready to accept 300 students in different specializations in the second semester of this year.
Dr. Dhiah Abou-Tair, the project’s manager from the German-Jordanian University provided a briefing about the project and the role played by EU in offering 400 scholarships to Syrian and Jordanian students. He also added that the second stage of this project will include 1000 grants.
Mr. Job Arts, attaché at the European Union delegation in Amman, clarified that the priority in the grants will be for the Syrian students who suspended their university study due to the situation in Syria, and that the grants will include all specializations to ease the effects imposed on refugees and to enable them continue their university study.
The Syrian Islamic singer, Yahya Hawa encouraged the Syrian youth to invest in this opportunity and apply for the grants, in order for them to improve their experiences and skills to lead a better life.
In the meeting, which was attended by more than 2000 Syrian students, ZU and GJU provided detailed information about the bachelor and masters degrees they offer. They also gave brochures about the training programs offered by Al Quds College.
During the meeting, an expanded dialogue took place to answer all the questions and inquiries of the students. The project sponsors toured the designated halls where Syrian students made their applications.
The Syrian students provided a positive feedback about the project which will ease their burdens and increase their chances in studying without any financial costs.
The open day was attended by Dr. Mahmoud Abu Saera, the Chairman of Board of Administration of Zarqa Company for Education and Investment (owner of Zarqa University and Zarqa University Schools and Kindergartens), Dr. Ratib Al Saud, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Zarqa University, representatives of the American Embassy in Amman, representatives of the British Council, and other donor institutions.
