Students of the School of Architecture and Built Environment (SABE) at the German Jordanian University (GJU) obtained advanced places in the seventh iSUSTAIN AWARD 2019, where the closing ceremony was held this year at the Jordan Museum.

The A/E Business Council announced the winners, where the student Nour Mansour won the second place for her (Agora project) under the supervision of Engineer Kawthar Rayyan. The project is re-purposing and adaptation of an old residential building in Lweibdeh serves its community as well as outsiders through providing new spaces needed for innovative locals to work and sell their products, and including tourists in this experience with the insertion of a boutique hotel in the existing structure.

The project also includes a highly needed open breathing space within wasted space in between commercial buildings and connects to a busy commercial street to encourage pedestrian exploration of the area.

On another hand, student Dina Goussous won third place for her project Alzheimer’s Care Center -Naour under the supervision of Engineer Bishr Zureikat. The project addresses the aging population who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, throughout all the stages, by meeting their social, physical, psychological and medical needs to improve their quality of life, manage the disease better and preserve their sense of self.

The Alzheimer care center’s design focuses on providing an environment that heightens the awareness and orientation of the residents by framing functions and landscape elements as wayfinding markers, which will assist patients in knowing where they are and provide them with clear paths to their destinations.

Furthermore, students Mohammed Shambish and Abdul Qader Qadri received certificates of appreciation, where Shambish submitted a project on The Rehabilitation of the cathedral of Benghazi under the supervision of Eng. Saja Nashashibi, and Qadri for his project Memory Park- Maddaba under the supervision of Eng. Leen Fakhoury.

The Jury consisted of Eng. Mohamed Al-Asam from UAE, Dr. Khaled Asfour from Egypt, Dr. Rasem Badran, Eng. Maysa Al-Bataineh, Eng. Ayman Z'aiter and Eng. Faris Baqa'een.

The competition targeted universities that offer architecture specialties at the local and regional levels. This year, several Jordanian, Palestinian, Lebanese, and Iraqi universities participated in 64 projects.

It is worth mentioning that the closing ceremony included two valuable lectures, the first lecture entitled "Revival of heritage and the contemporary environment within the Egyptian house" by Dr. Khaled Asfour, and the second on "3 cities of one vision" by architect Mohamed Al-Asam.
