Amman- 26 December 2018

Under the patronage of his Excellency Prof. Dr. Labib Al-Khadra, and the presence of Prof. Dr. Manar Fayyad, the president of the German Jordanian University (GJU), the School of Architecture and Built Environment (SABE) held a launching event for the book entitled “New Islamic Pattern” by Prof. Dr. Mohammad Ali Jalal Yaghan.

Prof. Labib gave an introduction welcoming the book, then Prof. Dr. Ziayd Haddad, the dean of the school, introducing the book and the Author.

Later, the Author presented a lecture about the subject of the book, which represents a new evolution to the Islamic geometrical patterns, and a contemporary vision making them, again, a contemporary art rooted with modern meanings and connotations, to affirm that this art is still alive and has, still, much to offer to the world, not only to Muslims.

Prof. Yaghan pointed out how his theory transcends all traditional limitations and boundaries, and presents patterns that has never existed before.

The event concluded by the author signing copies of the book. The master of ceremony was Arch. Tala Muhkaimar.

Regarding the book itself it presents in its first chapter, historical examples of traditional Islamic patterns indicating its extensive use in all Islamic visual artwork throughout history. The second chapter suggests a theory for the production of the traditional patterns. The third talks about the new patterns and the theory of their production. It also talks about the “neutrality” of these new patterns and how they match nature in its creational formations. The forth chapter presents example artworks of these new patterns.

The final chapter, entitled “Sufi Thoughts”, is about one aspect of these new patterns. It indicates the possibilities in creation and form evolution, and it relates them to the creation of the world in a Sufi trip in time via group artworks and poems. A step by step guide for creating the new patterns from the unit- to the pattern-levels is provided in the appendix.
