As part of the Vision Rehabilitation Center (VRC) mission in serving community and raising awareness among specialists working with children with vision impairment, a workshop was held for the teachers and specialists working at Al-Dhia Association for Education and Training of Visually Impaired Children.

The Director of the VRC Prof. Mohammad Hamed welcomed the participants, and gave brief about the services of the VRC including training for specialists and clinical rehabilitation services for persons with low vision. He emphasis on the importance of multiciliary approach and cooperation between specialists from different background to improve the services offered for children with vision impairment.

The workshop was comprehensive and full of interactive and hands on activities, the participants conducted several activities under simulation glasses to better understand the challenges persons with low vision are facing in their daily living activities, and the effect of different diseases on functioning such as near activities, orientation and mobility. The participants were introduced to the framework of the rehabilitation process including; assessment of needs, assessment of visual functions, offering assistive and magnifying devices with the proper training on using them, and the importance of environmental adaptation such as the proper lighting for different cases and improving contrast which will improve their independence and better include them in the community.

Moreover, the workshop covered the topics of Orientation and mobility (O&M), activities of daily living and early intervention for children with vision impairment.

The director of Al-Dhia Association DR. Feda’a Theeb discussed with the VRC the possibility of future cooperation and partnership, which will positively affect the quality of life for children with vision impairment and their families.
