On Monday, January 7, 2019, the School of Applied Medical Sciences (SAMS) at the German Jordanian University (GJU), organized a workshop on “Hydroponics in Jordan” led by Dr. Ziad Abu El- Rub and Prof. Samer Garableh, in cooperation with Hohenheim University - Germany and representatives from Jordanian institutions related to water and agriculture field.
The workshop aims at learning more about Hydroponics techniques, its applications, and advantages to use the German experience and apply it in Jordan.
The President of GJU, Prof. Manar Fayyad praised the efforts of the school, stressing on the importance of the subject especially with the tough conditions surrounded by water in Jordan, environmentally, humanly and politically.
Dr. Jorn Germer from Hohenheim University conducted a presentation on the project idea innovative hydroponics, its potentials and different scenarios for implementation in Jordan.
Vice President of GJU, Prof. Atef Kharabsheh joined the discussion expressing the issues related to water in Jordan. He encouraged the participants to explore innovative solutions to face the challenges.
The workshop’s subjects focused on the reality of the water situation in Jordan and its aspects, from where water quality, wastewater treatment units, the standards of water quality and wastewater in irrigation and hydroponics, besides wastewater utilization and the customer’s acceptance to wastewater products.
As part of the workshop agenda, the participants visited a farm and purification plant south of Amman to screen a pilot experiment on hydroponics.
