The British Council has selected Dr. Jumana Walid Maatouk, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences at the German Jordanian University for the final stage of the Council's Distinguished Alumni Award in the Science and Sustainability category.

GJU’s President, Prof. Ala’aldeen Al-Halhouli, extended heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Maatouk on her nomination for the award, indicating that GJU is always proud of the achievements of its faculty members and encourages them to do more in the field of scientific research, leadership and community service.

The award, which celebrates the outstanding achievements of graduates who have studied in educational institutions in the UK, and relies mainly on their contributions to science and sustainability, culture and creativity, social work, or business and innovation, is the most important and competitive award in the world, with around 1,450 graduate applicants from 100 countries around the world.

Through her career, Dr. Matouk obtained a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering from the Jordan University of Science and Technology and a master's degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Leeds, UK, where she was the only student to obtain this degree with distinction among the world's students in the major.

In order to fulfill her passion for research and career development, she pursued her PhD from the Institute of Automatic Control (IRT) at the University of Leibniz Hannover in Germany, where she was the first female PhD graduate from the Institute since its establishment in 1963.

In 2022, she was selected as an inspirational and successful woman on Women's Day at the level of Jordan by the IEEE Student Chapter at GJU, and she also received many national and international grants and awards such as: DAAD Research Grants - PhD programs in Germany, the Saeed Foundation Middle East Scholarship, and the National Technology Festival Award for two years in a row, where she won first place in the health and biomedical technology track, the SEED Research Scholarship from the German Jordanian University, and the Hijjawi Award.

Dr. Matouk is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the German Jordanian University and is the first Assistant Professor in the Department since the establishment of GJU in 2005. In her career, Dr. Matouk focuses on community service and health promotion and education through knowledge transfer and research activities in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
