Inventors Dr. Raed Mesleh and Dr. Omar Hiari from the School of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (SEEIT) have successfully managed to file the first US patent in the history of GJU.

Titled “Single RF Chain Transmitter Implementing Space Modulation”, the patent provides an apparatus for the implementation of hardware transmitters applying spatial modulation technology. Space modulation, originally discovered by Dr. Raed Mesleh during his Ph.D., is a novel wireless transmission technique that enhances on currently available technologies.

Space Modulation provides the promise of increased data rates at lower energy consumption levels, an ever increasing need with the prevalence of wireless technologies like 5G and applications like the Internet of Things.

Having been researched extensively in theory, Space Modulation was lacking a definition for a physical implementation. With their complementary backgrounds, both Dr. Raed and Dr. Omar teamed up together to define a physical implementation for Space Modulation and filed a patent to retain the Intellectual Property (IP).

As a result, this patent would enable the creation of hardware circuits that implement Space Modulation. Being the first to file a patent through GJU, Dr.’s Raed and Omar had to navigate through the hurdles of executing the patent related activities for the first time, hopefully paving the way for more inventions to be filed at GJU. This type of patent is expected to be sought by top wireless chip manufacturers such as Samsung, Qualcomm, Intel and others.

GJU family congratulate Dr.’s Raed and Omar on their achievement and wish them further success.
