On Wednesday, February 27, 2019, the School of Management and Logistic Sciences (SMLS), at the German Jordanian University (GJU) hosted the Arab Institute for Security Studies to present a lecture on Nuclear Programs in the Middle East: Analyzing Risks, by Stanton Nuclear Security Fellows at the Institute, Rana Sweis and Sam Hickey.

Dr. Nael AL Momani the instructor of “crisis management course” coordinated the lecture for the students within the school’s extracurricular activities. The lecture aims to introduce the students to the expansion of nuclear energy programs in the Middle East, the financial/ownership models in place, and efforts to mitigate risk in large infrastructure projects.

In the beginning, AL Momani discussed the management of nuclear incidents where he defined the action plan, danger zones, human, environmental and physical losses.

Rana Sweis spoke about researches that were conducted for the Institute by herself and Sam Hickey on nuclear energy diplomacy in the Middle East.

She explained the use of “end user” and “supplier” as a framework to analyze the two sides in negotiation, specifically in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab of Emirates, Jordan and Turkey that are actively negotiating or constructing nuclear power plants.

Sam Hickey discussed the nuclear market with an emphasis on the supplier perspective. He also demonstrated the three case studies of Egypt, Turkey, and Jordan and their efforts to develop a nuclear partnership with Russia besides the three financial models and risks related to the employment of these models.

In the end, the students engaged with the guests in a question and answer session.
