On  Tuesday, December 10, 2019, The German Jordanian University (GJU) represented by the President Prof. Manar Fayyad and the Department of Antiquities represented by Director General Mr. Yazeed Alayan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in the field of restoration and rehabilitation of terraces and water dams in the city of Petra- Jordan.

The MoU came as a continuation of the project “Restoration of the Ancient Nabataean Flood Control System in Wadi Madras at Petra” funded under a grant from the Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation of the American Embassy in Amman.

The main aim of the agreement is to rehabilitate some ancient terraces and water dams that existed from the Nabatean era, which was essential to protect the city from floods during the winter season.

The project team supervised by Dr. Nizar Abu Jaber, the Director of Center for the Study of Natural and Cultural Heritage (CSNCH) at GJU will begin with the rehabilitation of some terraces at the beginning of next year, in the meanwhile, the search for funding opportunities will be continued to have tens of terraces and dams at the area restored.
