On Thursday,12/01/2017, the cell therapy center (CTC) at the university of Jordan has organized a seminar presentation titled: Gut bacterial community study on Jordanian patients with phenylketonuria (PKU) suggests a faecal transplant or poop pills for treatment.
The seminar was presented by Dr. Walid Al-Zyoud as an invited speaker from the Applied Medical Sciences at the German Jordanian University based on his current research is being conducted at the department of Biomedical Engineering at the German Jordanian University. In his talk, Dr. Al-Zyoud has highlighted the importance of understanding the phenylketonuria as a metabolic disorder and challenges of its treatment in Jordan.
In addition, Dr. Al-Zyoud has insisted on his promising research outcome towards finding a promising treatment for PKU by using fecal transplantation with missing good bacteria. The PKU patients need special wheat and milk without phenylalanine, an amino acid which its accumulation in the brain of PKU patients may lead to mental retardation.
It might worth to mention that the Jordanian Ministry of Health provide PKU patients in with special wheat and milk based on governmental tenders. The seminar was attended by the whole staff at the CTC including its general director Professor Abdullah Al-Abbadi ended with a prolonged discussion that constituted a great chance to foster networking and future research collaboration between the University of Jordan and the German Jordanian University.
