The Biomedical Engineering Department students/ School of Applied Medical Sciences(SAMS) at the German Jordanian University (GJU) won second place for their project (EYE) in the Jordanian university students’ competition for entrepreneurial projects 2022.

Queen Rania Center for Entrepreneurship and Princess Sumaya University for Technology organized the competition as part of the activities of the Global Entrepreneurship Week in Jordan. Twenty-five projects participated from various public and private Jordanian universities.

Students Ghaith Al-Masry, Hamdi Al-Sheikhly, and Joanna Abdel-Qader presented the project and were supervised by Dr. Sameer Hassan. The project aims to help and enable people who are not able to hear or speak to interact with the various institutions of society and communicate with others to increase their chances of education, work, and independence.

The students developed a smart system that relies on modern technologies in the field of artificial intelligence and deep machine learning, which works to convert the sign language of the Arabic language into an audible voice, and also convert written texts into sign language. It is worth mentioning that Roboflow, a specialized company in Artificial Intelligence, has shown interest in the project by providing some services that help to develop this software effectively.

Dr. Hassan expressed his happiness for the students' achievement, which stresses the advanced level of GJU students through the opportunities it offers in education and training.

He pointed out that the achievement embodies the vision of His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein in empowering youth and supporting them in entrepreneurship and projects that serve human life, appreciating the role played by the Queen Rania Center, Princess Sumaya University and partners from the private sector in supporting and encouraging youth and university students to innovation and creativity.

It is noteworthy that the Deanship of Innovation, Technology Transfer, and Entrepreneurship at the university organized a training program for the university students who participated in the competition on the mechanism of developing ideas, presenting pioneering projects to investors, and applying the business model.
