A student delegation from the School of Applied Technical Sciences (SATS) at the German Jordanian University participated in a research project at the University of Furtwangen as part of the Study Group Mobility Project Titled: “Advanced Deep Learning Methods for Detection and Localization of Surgical Instruments in Laparoscopic Videos: A Modern Operating Room Perspective”.

The project is a multidisciplinary collaboration that addresses the development of advanced computer vision algorithms for real time detection and localization for surgical tools in modern operating rooms including vision transformer models and fused feature maps convolutional and attention neural networks.

The visit to Furtwangen University of applied Sciences included intensive meetings and discussions about the completed work as well as planning sessions for the next phase of collaboration. The University of Furtwangen has also arranged a social and cultural program that included excursions to some interesting historical and touristic nearby German sites.

The project team included the Head of the Mechatronics Department and the principal investigator (PI), Dr. Hisham ElMoaqet, and the students: Hamzeh Qaddoura, Rami Janini, Tala AlMasri, and Tareq Abeda.

We would like to thank the Furtwangen University for facilitating this very successful scientific and intercultural exchange between Germany and Jordan.
