The Human-Centered Computing (HCC) Lab at the German Jordanian University, led by Prof. Rami Alazrai, is dedicated to advancing human-centered computing through innovative applications of machine learning and deep learning. With a strong focus on brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and human behavior understanding (HBU), the lab’s mission is to design intelligent systems that enhance human-computer interactions and significantly improve quality of life, particularly for individuals with physical impairments.

In the BCI field, HCC Lab research addresses the needs of individuals with neurological and motor impairments by creating non-muscular pathways for communication and interaction. The lab has developed machine learning-driven systems for tasks such as controlling prosthetic hands, decoding wrist and finger joint movements through muscle activation signals, and detecting pain levels in cancer patients. Additionally, the lab has explored emotion and deception recognition using EEG signals, which has potential applications in healthcare, therapeutic support, and assistive technology. These projects not only push the boundaries of accessible computing but also empower individuals with disabilities to gain greater independence and control over their surroundings.

In the HBU field, the lab pioneers research that interprets complex human interactions and behaviors, leveraging human behavioral signals to predict actions. This includes analyzing non-verbal cues—such as facial expressions, body postures, and human actions—to recognize emotions, monitor daily activities, predict and detect falls in elderly populations, and understand human-to-human interactions. Recent funding has supported the development of machine learning models for activity recognition through Wi-Fi signal analysis, contributing to advancements in smart environments and non-wearable technology.

With its interdisciplinary and application-focused research, the HCC Lab is making significant strides in human-centered computing, paving the way for new collaborations and research funding opportunities. Through these efforts, the HCC Lab continues to transform theoretical insights into practical innovations that support accessibility and enhance quality of life.
