The German Jordanian University (GJU), in partnership with the University of Hamburg (UHH) in Germany, has launched the first joint PhD program in Social Work in Jordan and the region—a groundbreaking step aimed at advancing higher education in the social sciences and strengthening academic cooperation between Jordan and Germany. The program will be conducted on the GJU campus, while the PhD degree will be awarded by UHH, which is ranked among the top 150 universities worldwide.

The program is based on the “research doctorate” model adopted by the German education system, which allows students to start their dissertation research immediately without the requirement for traditional coursework. It is jointly supervised by faculty members from both GJU and UHH and focuses on contemporary social issues such as poverty, migration, domestic violence, mental health, and social justice, effectively linking theoretical research with practical application.

Prof. Alaaldeen Al-Halhouli, President of GJU, emphasized that the program reflects the university’s vision of providing high-quality, non-traditional education that integrates both academic and professional dimensions. He added: “We do not introduce academic programs merely to increase numbers; instead, we focus on developing innovative intellectual solutions that effectively address the challenges faced by our local and regional communities. Social work in our region requires a methodical and profound transformation rooted in innovation and social leadership. We are proud to be at the forefront of this change.”

In this context, Prof. Haitham Al-Thawabeya, Dean of the School of Applied Humanities and Social Sciences, stated: “This program is not merely an academic degree; it represents a strategic investment in human capital and the development of effective community leadership. Our goal is to prepare academics who can become decision-makers and advisors capable of driving positive change within both governmental and non-governmental institutions. Social work acts as a vital bridge between research and practice, between aspiration and implementation.”

The establishment of the PhD program in Social Work is not merely an academic addition but the realization of a strategic vision to graduate skilled researchers and professionals capable of addressing the challenges of modern society with innovation and competence. It empowers graduates to play an active role in promoting social justice and comprehensive development. Through this pioneering initiative, the university solidifies its position as a center of excellence and leadership in the social sciences, positioning education as a bridge to a future, that fosters a cohesive society capable of positive change and sustainable development.
