The Deanship of Student Affairs (DSA) at the German Jordanian University organized an awareness lecture entitled "Promoting Psychological Well-being to Prevent Drugs", in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and the Anti-Narcotics Department (AND). The lecture was presented by Mr. Wajeeh Al-Ghadran, a trainer at the Ministry of Youth, and Major Nabil Al-Rawashdeh, Head of the Awareness Section at the Anti-Narcotics Department.
Mr. Al-Ghadran spoke about the psychological effects of drugs, emphasizing the importance of mental well-being as a preventive tool against falling into the trap of drug abuse. He stressed that the main reasons young people experiment with drugs are often psychological frustration, lack of self-confidence, low self-esteem, and difficulty in setting and pursuing personal goals and ambitions. He explained that promoting mental well-being is one of the most effective ways to strengthen individuals' ability to face challenges and resist temptations that may lead to addiction.
For his part, Major Al-Rawashdeh emphasized that drugs represent a global threat faced by many countries, including Jordan, where efforts to combat them are ongoing at all levels. He pointed out that drug dealers specifically target youth, particularly university students, by exploiting their vulnerabilities and convincing them that drugs can enhance their mental performance and physical and cognitive abilities. However, these experiences often result in a deterioration of health and increased dependence on narcotics, ultimately leading to addiction. He also explained that drugs are divided into two types: those that cause rapid addiction and those that take longer, with both being extremely dangerous.
At the conclusion of the lecture, Dr. Thelal Owies, Dean of DSA, emphasized that the university continues its efforts to raise awareness among its students regarding important health and psychological issues. She pointed out that the university aims to provide a safe educational environment that supports both the psychological and physical well-being of students.
