Amman- 15 November 2022

The School of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (SEEIT) at the German Jordanian University (GJU) hosted a student-training workshop on the Digitalization of Cultural Heritage from Oct. 31 to Nov. 3, 2022.

The workshop was conducted under the umbrella of the DAAD-funded project titled "HAW International – Inter3DNA”. The workshop hosted three faculty professors from two German partner universities: Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences and Technical University Brandenburg. The participants of the workshop included two groups of students: 22 students from the German partner universities and 20 GJU students.

The idea was to create a mobile application prototype to scan markers or buildings at historical sites in Jordan and to interact with a digital layer that lets people explore history and culture on historical facts and material. The taught technologies were photogrammetry-workflows, app- and web technologies.

During the workshop, the students were clustered into six groups in which GJU students and the guest students (i.e., German students) collaborated in teams. At the closing ceremony of the workshop, the groups presented their results. The titles of projects presented by students were a) MALOAR (Marker and Location Augmented Reality), b) Virtual History, c) Comparison of the Impact Attributed to the Digitalization of Cultural Heritage, d) Petitour App e) Petra at Home, and f) A Day in the life of Nabataean.

Along with the academic goal of this workshop, it was an excellent opportunity for strengthening intercultural communication between German and Jordanian students. Students from both sides got the opportunity to interact with each other and discuss potential project and development collaboration. As for the Jordanian students, they found their companions from Germany where they practiced their German language skills, learned more about the German culture and got first-hand answers about their concerns regarding their upcoming experience to live in Germany for their mandatory study year. On the other side, the German students experienced by themselves Jordanian Culture and hospitality. Besides, they collaborated with GJU students in a foreign environment where they learned how to adapt and interact in such a new setup.

It is worth mentioning that the faculty professors from the German partner universities consisted of Prof. Julia Schnitzer, Prof. Dr. Paul Grimm, and Prof. Dr. Bettina Harriehausen-Mühlbauer.
