Machaerus 19 October 2024
The Camping Club, under the Deanship of Student Affairs (DSA) at the German Jordanian University (GJU), organized a hiking trip to the historic Fortress of Machaerus in southwest Madaba on Saturday, October 19, 2024.
This event was part of the club's mission to arrange exploratory trips around Jordan, allowing students to learn more about the country’s tourist and archaeological sites.
The hike began at Bishop Malechios Church Restaurant, leading to Machaerus Castle. A total of 39 students participated, divided into two teams to encourage teamwork and add an element of challenge. Through interactive games and competitions, participants enjoyed a fun-filled day exploring the history of the castle.
Built in 90 BCE by Hasmonean leader Alexander Jannaeus, Machaerus Castle was a center of resistance against the Romans. Located 35 kilometers southwest of Madaba and about 70 kilometers from Amman, the castle overlooks the Dead Sea and the West Bank, surrounded by valleys, caves, and scenic landscapes between Zarqa Ma’in and Hidan Valleys.
