The German Jordanian University (GJU) has achieved further progress in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, placing 403rd globally, 42 places higher than its ranking last year, and 231st in Asia. The achievement reflects the University’s continued efforts to advance sustainability and develop its environmental and institutional practices.
The progress comes as part of a global ranking that included 2,016 universities and higher education institutions from 110 countries. The ranking measures the sustainability performance of higher education institutions by assessing their efforts to develop a more sustainable campus environment and integrate sustainability principles into education, research, and institutional practices.
Since first participating in the ranking in 2023, GJU has continued to make notable progress, moving from 1,011th globally in 2023 to 572nd in 2024, 445th in 2025, and 403rd in 2026. This represents an improvement of 608 places globally over four years, along with an increase of 3,885 points in its overall score.
GJU President Prof. Ala’aldeen Al-Halhouli said the progress reflects the University’s commitment to transforming sustainability from a concept into an established practice across various aspects of university operations. He noted that GJU’s results in the UI GreenMetric ranking demonstrate its continued institutional efforts to develop a more efficient and sustainable campus environment and promote awareness of environmentally responsible practices among students and staff.
He added that the University is continuing to develop its initiatives and practices in the areas of energy, water, waste management, transportation, education, and research, strengthening its role in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals. He emphasized that sustainability is a key component of the University’s vision to build a university model that combines applied education, innovation, and responsibility toward the environment and society.
The UI GreenMetric ranking assesses university sustainability across six main categories: setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation, and education and research. These categories reflect the comprehensive nature of the assessment and its coverage of various aspects of sustainability within the university environment.
This progress reaffirms GJU’s commitment to continuously developing its sustainability framework and strengthening practices that contribute to a more efficient and responsible campus, in line with its vision of making sustainability an integral part of its academic and institutional journey.
