The German Jordanian University (GJU), through The School of Sustainable Systems and Engineering (SSSE), organized a workshop titled “The Impact of Batteries and Their Waste on the Environment: From Pollution to Recycling – Lessons from Germany”, at the Deanship of Innovation, Technology Transfer, and Entrepreneurship (DI-TECH). The event was organized by Dr. Yaqoub Al-Khasawneh.
The workshop aimed to highlight the environmental impacts of battery waste and explore sustainable recycling solutions, while drawing on German best practices and experiences in this field.
The event brought together key representatives from government institutions. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources delivered a presentation on Jordan’s energy transition, presented by Eng. Arwa Abu Kashif. The Ministry of Environment also contributed with a presentation titled “The Fate of Used Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Batteries in Jordan”, presented by Eng. Rahma Al-Rafayia.
In addition, the workshop featured participation from leading companies in the field of battery recycling in Jordan, who showcased the latest technologies and practices adopted in sustainable waste management.
Academic contributions from GJU faculty and researchers enriched the program with scientific presentations addressing the chemical hazards of spent batteries and methods for their safe disposal. The sessions also included in-depth discussions on enhancing collaboration between the public and private sectors to advance circular economy initiatives and improve waste management practices.
