GJU's Vision Rehabilitation Center’s Director held a meeting with Germany's Commissioner for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Mr. Jürgen Dusel, and a delegation from the German Embassy on Wednesday (March 1st, 2023). During the meeting, Mr. Jürgen Dusel expressed great interest in learning more about the VRC structure and mode of operation as well as the variety of services it offers to people with low vision.

On his part, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Hamed, the Director of VRC, welcomed the delegation and gave a full overview of the VRC’s structure, roles and responsibilities, and past and current projects and activities, and challenges facing the VRC. He also gave a full overview of the impact it had on the community as a whole. Furthermore, he added that the primary goal of the center is to create an inclusive community for persons with vision impairment.

Adding that this would be achieved by providing comprehensive rehabilitation services that improve their quality of life and increase their independence and participation and offering continuing practical education for specialists and raising awareness.

Additionally, Prof. Hamed discussed the center's awareness campaign to raise public, state, and low-vision people's awareness of the importance of a productive and inclusive society. The VRC’s awareness campaign is part of key activities of the “Low vision Rehabilitation Services and Professional Training in Jordan” project funded by the CBM. Ms. Maisaa Masoud, the instructor and vision rehabilitation specialist at VRC talked about the clinical vision assessment that they offered at the center, and the importance of assistive devices and comprehensive approach in vision rehabilitation.

Discussions regarding the future needs of the VRC were very fruitful and productive. Prof. Hamed asked Mr. Jürgen Dusel for technical assistance in training and developing the local capabilities at VRC. This is in addition to providing the VRC with a wide-range of assistive devices to be distributed free of charge to people with low vision. A gracious thank you was extended by Prof. Hamed to the German delegation for their kind visit to VRC and for their likely future support. The German delegation expressed their pleasure at the visit and their high appreciation for the achievements that the VRC made.
