Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Dr. Saleh Kharabsheh inaugurated the "Innovative Energy Solutions" conference on Thursday, hosted by the German Jordanian University on May 8–9, 2025. The event is attended by a distinguished group of experts and specialists in the energy sector.

In his opening speech, Kharabsheh stressed that enhancing the use of renewable energy and improving its efficiency requires local, regional, and international cooperation. He emphasized the importance of providing attractive financing options to encourage investment in the sector.

He pointed out the need to reduce the costs of renewable energy technologies through intensified research and development and the exchange of expertise among stakeholders.

Kharabsheh explained that the Arab region, with its desert landscape, possesses immense potential for renewable energy, positioning it to become a global leader in this field through optimal resource utilization. He added that energy is a vital issue that directly impacts sustainable development in Jordan, especially since the Kingdom lacks sufficient domestic commercial energy sources, importing 76% of its energy needs—an expense that consumes 8% of the national GDP due to rising global oil prices.

He affirmed that the success of energy transition depends on innovation in renewable energy and the development of alternatives to fossil fuels, highlighting the key role of solar power in achieving this transformation. He also noted that the Economic Modernization Vision prioritizes renewable and alternative energy through a clear roadmap.

Kharabsheh further stated that the Ministry’s doors are open to students specializing in the energy sector for any inquiries or cooperation that supports the development of the field. He concluded his remarks by reaffirming the government’s commitment to positioning Jordan as a regional hub for green energy production, capitalizing on the abundance of renewable resources, and conducting studies to implement modern technologies such as electric transportation, smart grids, energy storage, and green hydrogen.

For his part, Dr. Iyas Khader, Vice President of the German Jordanian University for Academic Excellence, said that the conference comes at a time when the world is witnessing rapid transformations in the energy sector. He pointed out that the challenges facing the world—from climate change to technological developments—require the creation of practical, science-based solutions for Jordan and the region.

Khader added that the conference is not only a platform for knowledge and experience exchange among experts and stakeholders but also a living testament to what youth can achieve when given the space to innovate.

The two-day conference aims to promote collaboration and knowledge exchange among engineers and experts in the fields of energy efficiency and the future of sustainable energy in Jordan. It includes interactive workshops and the formation of student committees in areas such as solar and wind energy, smart grids, heating and cooling systems, and sustainable transport, as well as discussions of challenges and the presentation of innovative, applicable solutions.
