On Saturday 10th of March 2018, the Road Safety Center of Excellence (RSCE) at the German Jordanian University launched its first event in the seminar series “Road Safety: Towards Safe and Sustainable Roads".

The seminar was held at Zain Innovation Campus (ZINC IN, Zain HQ). The center hosted two distinguished guest speakers, Professor Chandra Bhat, the Director of the Center for Transportation Research (CTR) and the Joe J. King Chair in Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin and Mr. Hazem Zureiqat, a transportation professional, partner and board mem​ber at Engicon and a cofounder of Maan Nasel, a public transport advocacy campaign.

At the beginning of the seminar, Prof Bhat presented some of his work in the field of automated and connected vehicles, its safety and mobility benefits and how connected vehicle technology can enhance transportation system performance through the provision of real-time traffic, transit, parking data.

The second part, which was presented by Mr. Zureiqat involved discussion of the situation and the challenges in the transportation system in Jordan, the achievements of Ma’an Nasel campaign and the possible opportunities for change in the future.

Afterwards, prof. Bhat met the students and the engineers who are interested in pursuing their graduate studies and informed them about the transportation master’s program at the University of Texas at Austin. He explained the admission procedure, the selection criteria and the financial support.

It is worth mentioning that this monthly public event will be held on the first Saturday of every month. It is intended to form the climax of an important series of informative meetings where the participants will be able to share experiences, learn from each other about the latest innovative technologies in the field of traffic and transportation and the chances for creating safer and more sustainable roads. This platform will also enable the participants to strengthen contacts with their peers.
