About the Center

The GJU Language Center was established in summer 2012. It is considered to be a central institution serving all departments of the university, particularly students in addition to the teaching and administrative staff. Its primary task is language tuition; at present the teaching of German as a foreign language, in future a significant range of English and Arabic courses will be provided.

There is currently an international staff of fifty qualified teachers in the German section, who provide practical and communicative instruction in German (compulsory for all students) at five – in the future six – levels. This entails GJU to have one of the largest German departments worldwide. Our students attain level B1 of theCommon European Framework of Reference forLanguages (in future as high as B2).

But the courses we offer range well beyond the current German programs. At the intermediate level, we offer a wide variety of Technical Language, Intercultural Communication, Application Training and Academic Writing modules. We also prepare our students for Goethe Institute Certificate examinations; the unique co-operation with the Goethe Institute Amman allows the students to take these exams at the end of the German courses. This gives our students an excellent outlook for commencing studies at German higher educational institutions, and helps them in the quest for accommodation and employment.

Our Technical Language modules, which are continually expanding, constitute a superb preparation for the one-year stay in Germany which is mandatory for all students. The Center is unique as it fulfills students’ specific needs and seeks to level up to their expectations. The success of the Center can be attributed to the oustanding connections that exist between the Language Centre and all departments of the University, facilitating the extremely fruitful inter-institution co-operation.

The only “TestDaF” Centre in Jordan is located within the Language Centre, tests required for degree-level study in Germany are held regularly. Besides the programs already mentioned, the Center also offers German courses for GJU’s employees. Currently, it is developing blended learning projects in cooperation with partners such as Deutsche Welle and the DUO Learning Portal. Other projects are in course of preparation.

English, Arabic and other Languages

There is a large English Section in the GJU as well as facilities for improving a limited command of the Arabic language. Plans are in hand for creating an integrated Arabic Section which will offer Arabic as a Foreign Language to various categories of students. During the reorganization of our language provision, English and Arabic are housed for the time being in the Faculty of Languages, but we anticipate transferring both languages to the Language Centre as well as offering others in the coming future.
